Research Interests
My current main research interests include the
Impurity profiling of drugs of abuse is an tool widely used by forensic scientists in the on-going fight against illegal drug trafficking and abuse. My main focus concerns the impurity profiling of newly emerging amphetamine-type substances which have been reported in Europe, in addition to synthetic cannabinoids. While the impurity profiles of many drugs of abuse, including cocaine and heroin, have been well documented in the literature, these emerging substances are less studied.
In terms of the expansion of pharmacy services in Ireland, I currently co-supervise two PhD students (both recruited in 2024) who are exploring the expansion of community pharmacy services and emerging roles in the Republic of Ireland in addition to the role of the hospital pharmacist in ambulatory care settings in Ireland's hospital network. In August 2025, I recruited, as a co-supervisor, a further PhD student, to commence in October 2025, whose research focus will also be in the growing field of emerging roles and services of Irish-registered based pharmacists, over and above their more traditional roles.
Regarding novel teaching and other pedagogical strategies, I am a UCC Teaching and Learning Fellow in addition to a member of the university Centre for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning. I have spoken at conferences nationally in addition to the UK, Norway, Spain and Australia concerning novel teaching and learning strategies I have established within UCC's School of Pharmacy.
- impurity profiling of substances subject to abuse and misuse, and
- the expansion of the roles of pharmacists
- novel teaching and other pedagogical activities pertaining to the discipline of pharmacy
- To establish chemical links between batches of related drugs.
- To help identify new clandestine drug manufacturing laboratories and to monitor synthetic routes widely used in the synthesis of illicit amphetamines.
- To determine the toxicity, if any, of impurities which arise from the synthesis of amphetamines employing various different routes.
- Results from my research group provide valuable information on the determination of how novel, so called "designer" hallucinogenic amphetamines are synthesised in clandestine laboratories. There are usually little published synthetic, analytical and detection method data available on these compounds upon their appearance ad drugs of abuse. The research area helps to fill this knowledge gap which is extremely important to national and international forensic detection facilities.
- My research also focuses on the independent synthesis of many of the novel impurities which are isolated.
- The ability to efficiently impurity profile a chemical process is a core skill of an industrial chemist. With the large number of pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in Ireland, postgraduates with specific experience in impurity profiling and strategies to minimise impurity formation are an obvious attraction to the industry. The experience gained by postgraduate students undertaking research in my chosen area will therefore be invaluable to the pharmaceutical industry.

Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland | I was Chief Coordinator in running examinations within UCC on behalf of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) for non-EU qualified pharmacists who wish to register as pharmacists in Ireland under the so-called Third Country Qualification Route (TCQR). Over the nine year period, the School ran over 15 examinations, with greater than 300 TCQR candidates examined, and resulting in the generation of substantial income for the School during that timeframe. |
Outreach Activities
Description | |
---|---|
As current Chair of UCC's School of Pharmacy Student Experience Committee, I am occasionally involved in outreach activities and the creation of promotional materials for UCC's pharmacy programme. For example, I developed and recorded a YouTube promotional video for prospective undergraduate pharmacy students of the programme. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Smps1RPAMdc. |
|
From the period 2005 to February 2010, I was Chair of the Chemistry Department Promotion of Chemistry Committee. The committee was involved in organising events related to chemistry for primary and secondary school students and their parents. |
Other Activities
Description | |
---|---|
Scientific Advisor to the Irish Department of Health, Department of Justice and the Health Service Executive (HSE) regarding the emergence and control of substances subject to abuse and misuse in Ireland. I have being doing this role for over a decade. I advise on proposed wording of Statutory Instruments (SI) prior to their publication to the Irish Statute Book. |
|
Since 2022, I act as Chair of PhD and MD vivas for both the College of Medicine and Health (CoMH) and College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) in UCC. My role as Chair involves ensuring that vivas are conducted according to UCC regulations and to be an advocate for the examinee to ensure that the viva is conducted fairly and with due process. |

In 2017, I spent a month at the School of Pharmacy, University of Auckland, where I worked with the Department of Medicinal Chemistry staff to modify their approaches to teaching and assessment of the discipline within the University of Auckland's BPharm programme. Up to 2017, the chemistry programme content was significantly non-pharmacy focused. The purpose of my visit was to share both my own approach and that of UCC's School of Pharmacy in how the discipline of chemistry could be better integrated and made more relevant to a pharmacy context within an undergraduate pharmacy programme. |
|
I was appointed a UCC Teaching and Learning Fellow in 2019 and I have maintained that role since my appointmeny. My roles in this position include advising on

|
For several years (2014 to 2019), I was a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland Accreditation Panel for Trinity College Dublin's integrated MPharm programme. the purpose of the panel was to oversee the transition of TCD's pharmacy programme to its newly established integrated version and to monitor the new programme's content, focus and quality. |
|
I was a Member of the Irish Institute of Pharmacy (IIOP) Steering Group for several years. The group oversaw the initial establishment of formal Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for pharmacists in Ireland on behalf of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland. My role on the Group was to oversee budget spending and progress in the establishment of the national CPD system for Irish-registered pharmacists. |
|
Since 2015, I have been developing and delivering Continuing Professional Development lectures and seminars, both online and in-person, to practising Irish pharmacists through the Irish Pharmaceutical Union (IPU) CPD Academy. Seminars are typically attended by hundreds of Irish practising community and hospital pharmacists. |
Teaching Interests
My main teaching interests are in the area of medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry and clinical pharmacy.
Within these fields, I am particularly interested in the synthesis, characterisation and quality control of drugs and medicines used in both human and veterinary medicine, in addition to natural products which are used or can be adapted for use as medicines. In addition, I have a significant interest in exploring novel pedagogical methods and applying those methods within the classroom.
I have been a pioneer within the School in terms of the original establishment of the BPharm curriculum in UCC, which commenced in September 2023, in addition to overseeing its transformation to an integrated MPharm programme over several years, commencing in 2014.
I teach and contribute to modules across both the School of Pharmacy (BPharm and MPharm) and School of Chemistry (BSc (Chemistry); BSc (Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds); BSc (Chemistry with Forensic Science) in addition to the School of Pharmacy MSc in Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems.
Modules which I contribute to include the following:
In the 2025/2026 academic year, I am module coordinator of modules CM3101, PF3016, PF3009, PF6420.
Further information concerning UCC Modules can be found at: https://ucc-ie-public.courseleaf.com/modules/.
As part of the UCC's and School of Pharmacy's internationalisation strategies, I frequently teach pharmacy students at Future University Egypt (FUE), based in Cairo, Egypt. I have been teaching at FUE since 2015, and teach groups of FUE students in years 1, 3 and 5 both online and on site in Cairo on an annual basis. The impact of my pedagogical contributions to FUE include facilitating staff there to transform their teaching of the discipline of medicinal chemistry form a more theoretical basis to its application, at ground level, to the discipline of pharmacy.
In recent years, I have developed increased interest in the theory of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, and how medicinal chemistry can be integrated into the UCC BPharm curriculum in a meaningful way. I completed a Masters degree in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in UCC, graduating in 2020. I have been appointed as a UCC Teaching and Learning Fellow, and oversee aspects of the running of the university Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, including the mentoring of student groups enrolled on the Diploma programme.
I deliver CPD talks on behalf of the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) Autumn and Spring CPD programmes to qualified pharmacists. I am also on the Irish Institute of Pharmacy (IIOP) Steering Group which is involved in the establishment of structures CPD for Irish Pharmacists under the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland(PSI).
