Siun O'Flynn

Biography

                      
A UCC graduate, Dr O'Flynn spent a number of years working in clinical medicine before expanding her role in medical education.
She has led curricular reform within the School of Medicine in UCC and currently is responsible for the operational management and accreditation of the 5 year medical programme. She is also the co-director of a number of clinical masters programmes.
Dr O`Flynn leads a team of staff with a specialist interest in medical education in the Medical Education Unit. All of these staff hold significant teaching roles and also work with colleagues in other departments in the School to ensure that teaching, assessment, curriculum mapping and course evaluation in all medical programmes are informed by evidence-based best practice and also meet the requirements of national and international accreditation bodies.
Dr O’Flynn has published widely in the area of medical education and is an education advisor to the Royal College of Physicians Ireland, the Irish Medical Council, the Higher Education Authority and the Health Information and Quality Authority serving on or chairing various committees therein. She is a member of the Education , Training and Professional Development Committee of the Irish Medical Council.
Her research interests include entry and selection methods, professionalism, technology enhanced learning and error reduction in medicine. She has authored a national report evaluating the revised entry and selection mechanisms to medicine which were introduced in 2009 in Ireland and leads a multi-institutional medical education research team.
She is on the editorial board of a number of medical education journals.
She also works part-time as a consultant in General Internal Medicine in Cork University Hospital.
