Vladimir Ogurtsov

Biography

Dr. Vladimir I. Ogurtsov was conferred with a MEngSc degree (with honours) in 1976 and awarded a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Moscow Power Engineering Institute (Technical University) (MPEI), Russia in 1981. He has Russian academic qualifications as Senior Scientist (1986) and Associate Professor (1992). He joined Tyndall National Institute-UCC in 2000. Here, he is a staff research scientist, R&D activity leader in Life Science Interface group where he heads the Electronic Instrumentation Systems section, which focuses on development of chemical and biochemical sensors, instrumentations, signal processing and simulation for different applications including security, environmental, biomedical and food safety applications. He provides supervision and direction of the section’s activity in a number of EI and EU research projects being the project PI and work package leader and the key sensor, instrumentation and signal processing expert in the projects. In the last 5 years he was PI of EI CFTD (OXYTOOL CFTD/07/124) and 4 EU (HANDHOLD FP7-SEC-2011-1- 284456, ECO-INDIA FP7-ENV-2012.6.6-1, BOND FP7-NMP-2008-1.1-1, SHOAL FP7-ICT-231646) projects with total funding over 2 million euro. All projects had positive reviews and EU-FP7 SHOAL project, which was aiming at search and monitoring of contaminants, pollutants and leaks in vessels in port using a swarm of robotic fish, was selected for showcasing Ireland’s success in European research programs. He is an author of 65 scientific papers including  published in peer reviewed journals such as Nature protocols, Electroanalysis, Electrochimica Acta, Integrative Biology, Sensors and Actuators, IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, Talanta, 4 monographs and 12 filed patents. He has extensive expertise in different fields of science and technology, among them wireless applications, signal processing, microprocessor systems, user-friendly software, electrochemical and biochemical sensors development and characterisation, sensing instrumentation and computing simulation of the electrochemical and biochemical sensing system. His current research interests encompass electrochemical and biochemical detection systems which combine electrochemistry, instrumentation and signal processing with micro- and nano-technology tools.
