Jeremiah D.G. Murphy

Biography

Professor Murphy has been the SFI-funded MaREI Centre Director since 2015, guiding it to global leadership in the Energy Transition, Climate Action and Blue Economy. Under his directorship (together with Prof Brian O’ Gallachoir) MaREI has expanded to a twelve University/Institute centre with 200 researchers and €60M in research funding since 2013. He has led MaREI successfully through three International reviews and secured funding for MaREI phase II for the years 2019 - 2024. 

Professor Murphy is a world-leading gaseous and algal biofuels researcher with 140 peer review journal papers in high-impact journals. His h-Index (50)places him in the top 5 internationally-cited scholars in biogas researchbuilding on the selection of his paper by the American Chemical Society for a virtual issue highlighting the best work on biofuelsin 2009 and 2010. 
He is on a list of the most cited Civil Engineers worldwide.
 

Professor Murphy represents Ireland at the International Energy Agency Bioenergy since 2007.  Due to his world-leading scholarship in bioenergy and algal biofuels,  Professor Murphy was elected by his international peers to lead the Biogas Task from 2016 till 2018. In this role he authored/edited 11 IEA Bioenergy reports, 13 case stories, chaired 6 Symposia and provided expert evidence to the IEA and the European Commission. He was re-elected unanimously by the 16 country delegates for a second trimester (2019 – 2021). 
 

Professor Murphy has supervised 31 postgraduates and currently has a team of 12 bioenergy researchers.  He has a strong history of working with industry, securing over €600K industry research cash and co-authoring 9 peer review journal papers with industry. This work has led to (and provided evidence for) Gas Network Ireland’s target of 20% green-gas in the gas grid by 2030. 
 

Professor Murphy initiated UCC’s collaboration with Zhejiang University (ranked in the top three Universities in China) and Chongqing University. To date, there has been an exchange of 4 researchers and twelve peer review journal papers published. In 2018 the Chinese Academy flew Prof Murphy to China on a 10-day 3 city lecture tour. 
 

Professor Murphy holds the chair in Civil Engineering, the 12th person to hold the post since 1849. He obtained accreditation for the Civil Engineering Degree and instigated the integrated 5-year Master’s Degree. Previously he obtained accreditation for the first Energy Engineering Degree in Ireland. 
 

Professor Murphy was awarded the Engineers Ireland Excellence Award (2015) for best paper/presentation, The Marine Industry Award for Excellence in Marine Research (2017), an adjunct professorship in University of Southern Queensland (2018) a fellowship of the Irish Academy of Engineers in 2019.

Jerry has lectured on a variety of civil and environmental engineering modules, including for structural design, hydrology, wastewater treatment and environmental design, waste management, surveying and descriptive geometry. At present he delivers moduels in transportation and bioenergy topics. His research lends to a strong energy and sustainability perspective on transportation and fuels.
