BIOGRAPHY

Michael Egan qualified with a BE degree from the NUI in 1977. He was awarded a European Union Travelling Fellowship to study as a research engineer at the Centre d'Etudes Nucléaires de Grenoble, Grenoble, France from 1977 to 1979. He was then conferred with an MEngSc degree for work on electro-optical modulation techniques in rapid interferometry for high power plasma diagnostics. He was employed as a College Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Microelectronics at UCC and was awarded a PhD degree from the NUI for research in PWM techniques for switched reluctance and induction motor drive systems in 1985. He is currently Senior Lecturer in the department and was the co-founder and director of PEI Technologies UCC, a national centre of excellence in power electronics undertaking contract research for companies in this sector worldwide. He has published extensively in the general area of power electronics and is the holder of several patents in switched mode power conversion and motor control.  He is also a member of the IEEE and the IET.

Research Interests

Power electronics, Electrical machines, Power systems. 

Research has been undertaken in the area of high frequency switched mode power conversion, specifically resonant converter topologies, high efficiency compact fluorescent lighting systems, LED lighting, active power factor correction, voltage regulator modules and automotive power electronics. More recently, with the growing awareness of the challenges of global energy supplies, new research activity is on-going in power take-off systems for applications in wave energy.
