Biography
Declan Fallon, BArch (Hons) UCD, joined the Architecture Department of Cork Institute of Technology in September 2006 primarily to work on the new BSc (Hons) Architecture degree in conjunction with University College Cork.
Declan graduated from U.C.D. Architecture in 1995. Since then he has worked in a number of practices in Dublin and Berlin and as an external tutor in Dublin Institute of Technology in 1999-2000. He has worked on projects ranging from domestic to large civic schemes.
He worked with GOAL in Sri Lanka following the Tsunami in 2004. He has also worked in private practice and as a consultant to a number of practices for 12 years .
Research Interests
• Prototyping in Facade Design - Project Based design and application of biometric principles within the building envelope
• Studies of biometric models- Design and research
• Investigation of Building Materials and Bio mimicry – Design Strategies and performance
Bio mimicry is based on the principles and processes extracted or inspired by nature.The building envelope is effectively the external ‘skin’ of a building .This may form a narrow plenum between the interior and exterior of an enclosure or may form the ‘shell and/or (part) core’ of a construction.
Envelopes within the natural and built environment tend to perform functions such as (structure, liquid / humidity modulation, insulation /solar protection, finishes) These roles represent some of the primary functions of most assemblies of built enclosures.
Comparison, investigations and inspiration of envelopes found in ‘nature’ and prototyping within the built environment is therefore a noteworthy and fruitful preoccupation for designers.
Research and development of studio based lectures on the historical development of mapping and cartography. Design opportunities with these fields of study.
