Research Profile

Jason O'Shaughnessy

Biography

I am the MArch Programme Director at CCAE (2009), the founder and Principal of Architecture 53seven (2000), and Co-Founder of DATUM [ Architectural Research Investigations] (2012). My research involves forming new and critical understandings of the 21st century City, and between architecture and wider urban environments.

I am currently undertaking a PhD (Architecture) at the University of Edinburgh, having previously graduated with Distinction from the University of Edinburgh (1999), and from the Queens University of Belfast with First Class Honours (1996).

I have contributed to ongoing critical debate in architecture through presentations to various Architectural forum over the past 14 years which include; The Andrew Carnegie Lecture Series PhD Symposium (Edinburgh 2014), AHRA PhD Sympsoium (2014), ARENA Network Meeting (Brussels 2014), Tallinn Architecture Biennale (TAB) (Estonia 2014), and Istanbul Design Week (IDW 2013 ) 2013, “New Pedagogies in Spatial Practice". Presentation to All Ireland Architecture Research Group 2013, "The City as Palimpsest" in Darc Space 2012, The All Ireland Architecture Research Group (AIARG) in 2011, Frequencies Lecture Series (National Sculpture Factory Series) in Cork in 2011, The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture & Built Environment (2010), Architectural Association of Ireland (AAI) at Dublin Institute of Technology in 2010, The University of Limerick (SOFA) in 2009, at the Institute Cervantes and AAI,. Fresh-air-kitecture Series in 2009 in conversation with Victoria Acebo (AceboXAlonso), the Showcase Lecture at the European Architecture Student Assembly (EASA) in 2008, , Defining Space International Symposium on Architecture in 2007, University College Dublin “Aparallel Evolution” in 2007,The Limerick Architecture Forum (RIAI). Limerick in 2004, and The University of Edinburgh in 2002.

Through my practice Architecture 53seven, I have been nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2009 and received several other architectural awards, most notably a Special Commendation at the inaugural World Architecture Festival in Barcelona 2008, an AAI Special Award in 2008, several RIAI Regional Awards and Commendations- which include a finalist in the RIAI Silver Medal 2011, and has been a finalist for the BD Young Architect of the Year in 2008 & 2009. I have lectured extensively on research themes relating to my practices in architecture; presented a Showcase Lecture at the European Architecture Student Assembly (EASA) in 2008, was exhibited at the Defining Space International Symposium on Architecture in 2007 and been an invited guest critic to several Schools of Architecture which include; The Architectural Association (AA), The Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow, The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture & Built Environment, The University of Edinburgh, University College Dublin, Dublin Institute of Technology, and The University of Ulster.

My design research works have been widely published both nationally and internationally, and considers appropriate modes of investigation that develop new spatial and programmatic forms into the urban and human environment of the City. The work considers appropriate modes of investigation of the urban environment, that consider and develop new spatial and programmatic forms that reflect the complexities of contemporary life.

Research Interests

WORKING WITH THE CONTINGENT    [ imprévu]

Perhaps it is because architects are compelled to constantly mediate a sort of oscillating ‘milieux’ i.e theory, practice and environmental limits, that we see where new possibilities for knowledge acquisition emerging; whereby one must engage multi-modal intelligences in order to allow for the emergence of a coherent design provocation.

From this arises the inevitable question of ‘finding’ form, which I consider must do so in a non-linear way- often by re-exploring supposed ‘dead-ends’, and even by being mislead into things that seems initially unproductive. Any critically-based works must also be capable of dealing with the unforeseen and the unexpected; and in order to deal with such contingent conditions- the design project must be constructed through subtle acts of observation and speculation, whereby even the act of drawing (including models and text-making) has its own epistemological value. Understood in this way, the drawing itself has become a site of inquiry for us; which critically has an inherent speculative potential in the establishing of new formal, spatial and programmatic possibilities. In doing so, it allows the work to develop through a series of permutative and combinational interests; tethering bodily, spatial, and atmospheric conditions and the architectural project itself.

Such practices expose a wide range of alternative measures in dealing with the study of contemporary city and its urban landscapes. My interest in this wider field of disciplinary exchange, is to move toward the making and writing of architecture, and instead to produce sites that continually operates in a dissensual way- which in turn indicates an interest in forming critical research inquiry The purpose of attempting to extend these referencing terms, is that I consider it important that ideas of scholarship and learning are constructed within a distinct cultural and epistemological environment.

Inherent in these explorations is the ambition to craftily intermingle the old and new, and to find ways to productively heighten the experiential and circumstantial- in ways that rely on being simultaneously protomodern and radically near future, and in order to expose new potentialities for architecture and the 21st century city.

 Description

DATUM [ Architectural Research Investigations ] I initiated and founded and evolved this new collaborative practice that situates architecture in a wider field of cognate disciplines, with a view to circumscribing new and experimental research collaborations between architecture and these cognate art forms. An upcoming event in 2013 will see a research symposium and exhibition held during Istanbul Design Week (November 2013), which will explore the hidden potential and unexpected conditions of The City, through a series of mediating lenses- from academics, artists, writers and architects. This forum will seek to situate distinct aspects of cultural, spatial and topographical complexities of the 21st century city, and is an opportunity for a radical review of emergent spatial practice in Ireland- one that challenges the position of architecture within the wider public and cultural context. I am a founding partner and Research Director of this collaborative practice involved in developing new forms of spatial and material explorations that are primarily inter-disciplinary. The central activities of this emerging practice are around exploring art, technology, and architecture at all scales and forms. DATUM has also been involved in developing International Symposium in Istanbul (Istanbul Design Week) in 2013. It works closely with public art galleries emerging art practices and networks and academic institutions in Ireland and overseas.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

Director of Master of Architecture Programme:

As Director of the Master of Architecture Course at CCAE Cork Centre for Architectural Education, I had overall responsibility for the design of the key intellectual and thematic direction of the Course since 2010. This involved that the Course structure and content complied with Article 46 of Directive 2005/36/EC, the Building Control Act 2007, and the RIAI Competencies for Architects- leading to successful Accreditation of the Course in 2012.

APPLICATION OF INTERESTS

The Master of Architecture Course aims to encourage a distinctive, design-based culture through the development of conceptual and innovative design. This idea is advanced by an interest in combining emerging trajectories in design pedagogy with new attitudes for complex spatial analysis and mapping.

The year begins with an introduction of the city of study and to a thematic field of interests. The wider theoretical concerns of the Course are then tested and elaborated through an intensive period of Field Work in the selected city- followed the development of a critically situated Thesis project.

It is thought that the various attitudes that develop within the overall pedagogical environment can begin to speculate on the patterns of organisation, the accretion of historical strata, and the network of infrastructural and political conditions that define the twenty-first-century City. The overall aim of the Course considers is to form architectural scenarios that provoke something new, unexpected, and ultimately challenging within their particular environments and contexts.

PROJECTS REVIEW (ISTANBUL.2012)

"The theme of the MArch - City as Palimpsest-applies both to Istanbul and the students' work. The profusion of models, drawings and artefact's indicate a strong commitment to expressive aesthetics, tactile materiality and the poetics of contemporary urbanism. Found objects are incorporated and transformed, indicating the relevance of the past to the present, and the effects of one on the other. Instruments and devices pervade the display but, rather than dry machines, they are means to understand the self in relation to society and to cultivate the personal and collective imagination. Among its many successes, the MArch programme recognises that the buildings and cities we inhabit are infused with myths, which affect how and what we perceive. A city also needs 'creative myths' that allow its inhabitants to understand it collectively and imagine its future. The same challenge applies to the Cork School of Architecture, as the works produced in this MArch programme so evocatively recognises."
