He has previously taught in Queens University Belfast and University College Dublin, and has been a visiting critic in Cornell University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Oxford Brookes University, University College Dublin, and TU Dublin. He is currently external examiner at the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff University.
He is also founder of John McLaughlin Architects - an award-winning interdisciplinary collaborative practice that has been recognised for developing new ways of practicing architecture. The practice's work ranges across masterplans, public buildings, workplaces, private houses, exhibitions and installations.
In 2012 he was appointed by Culture Ireland and the Arts Council to curate Ireland's Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale. The exhibition, titled "Shifting Ground" looks at the cultural implications of globalisation for Irish Architecture through the work of heneghan peng architects. In 2014 he was appointed (with Gary A. Boyd) to co-commission/curate/design Ireland's Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale. The exhibition titled "Infra-Eireann" looked at the social and material development of the Irish state through infrastructures. In 2015 he was appointed by Irish Year of Design 2015 to design a series of exhibitions in Milan, New York, Dublin, Eindhoven and London showcasing contemporary Irish design. In 2016 he was commissioned (with Prof Boyd) by the Arts Council to develop a centennial exhibition of architecture looking back at a century of development since 1916. The exhibition titled "Making Ireland Modern" toured Galway, Cork and Dublin and was the major celebration of architecture in the state in 2016. In 2019 he won the Arthur Gibney Award for Architecture from the Royal Hibernian Academy and he exhibited at the Words + Works Biennale of Artistic Research in Architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen (KADK).
His creative practice has won many awards and in 2015 was named Best Emerging Practice by the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland (RIAI), who said - “John McLaughlin Architects is a practice that is putting architecture in a wider and international context – from their role as co-curator and co-commissioner of the Venice Architecture Biennale to architecture, education and master-planning. There is confidence in working at a range of scales and across various disciplines, while maintaining a focus on craftsmanship, details and materials. This is not only a new practice but a studio that demonstrates a new way of practicing in architecture.”
He is a member of the Council of the RIAI and is chair of the editorial board of the journal "Architecture Ireland".
Biography
John is Senior Lecturer in Architectural Design at Cork Centre for Architectural Education in University College Cork where he leads the four-year undergraduate architecture programme, as well as design-based research projects. His academic research draws on his wide experience of architectural practice and includes written and design-based outputs, such as books, conference papers, and exhibitions.
