Eric Wolsztynski

Biography

I obtained my PhD in Statistical Signal and Image Processing at the University of Nice (France) in 2006, working on theoretical aspects of robust estimation methods and their application to image processing. In 2007 I joined the Signal Processing Group at Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany), where I worked on developing robust methods for tracking wireless terminals in realistic environments. I joined the diagnostic imaging group within the Statistics Department at UCC in 2008. I am now a Statistics lecturer at the School of Mathematical Sciences and conduct the main part of my research in biomedical statistics, with an interest in spatial analysis, computational statistics and adaptive techniques. My work focuses on statistical analysis and modelling techniques for the assessment of tumour activity, prognosis and response to therapy from positron emission tomography (PET), Computer Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging data. I also have a long-term interest in various computational statistics and statistical learning topics. I particularly enjoy working on real-life applications involving such problems, especially in actuarial science as it relates to my teaching practice.

Research Interests

My main research work focuses on the development of statistical methods for the analysis of cancer imaging data. We consider in particular problems related to the assessment of prognosis, staging and chances of disease recurrence, mainly from PET imaging data but also from MRI and CT information. Spatial heterogeneity of the 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake pattern in particular has been established as a strong prognostic indicator for sarcoma, lung, breast and other cancers. My main research work consists in developing new quantification methodologies for characterization of tumour metabolism and structure. Spatial models of the volumetric distribution of PET tracer uptake within the volume of interest are used to extract relevant metabolic and structural descriptors of the tumour, for the assessment of prognosis and therapeutic response.

More generally, in both my research and teaching I am interested in the fields of computational statistics, adaptive estimation and aspects of statistical learning, with biomedical and actuarial applications.
