Biography
Overview
As of February 2016, Eirini has been part of MaREI’s Earth Observation team, where she works on two international research projects.
Current Activities
Eirini is currently working on:
- The European Commission H2020 Co-ReSyF project (Grant Agreement No. 687289) - Coastal Waters Research Synergy Framework, www.co-resyf.eu
The project is developing a framework that is a research and education resource enabling EO and non-EO experts, and coastal researchers to explore and realise the potential of Earth Observation data in coastal and marine water research.
- The ESA C-TEP project - Coastal Thematic Exploitation Platform, http://coastal-tep.eo.esa.int/
The project is developing an online platform for EO data access, processing and analysis, providing operational services to the coastal and marine community.
Background
Eirini holds a BSc in Marine Sciences (University of the Aegean, Greece), MSc in Remote Sensing, Image Processing and Applications (University of Dundee, UK) and PhD in Limnology and Remote Sensing (University of Dundee, UK).
She is an aquatic remote sensing scientist with interest in global environmental change and the sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems (inland and marine). She has worked in marine, coastal and lake water remote sensing applications, as well as studies of land-water interactions. Previous involvement in projects includes:
- Coastal zone management
ERDF INTERREG ΙΙΙΑ Greece-Cyprus Project (K.2301.001) - A Study of the Impacts of Human Activities in the Quality of the Coastal Environment and Selection of Environmental Quality Indices in the frame of Coastal Zone Management, according to the Directive 2000/60/EC
- Lagoon management
EC FP5 DITTY Project (EVK3-CT-2002-00084) - Development of an Information Technology Tool for the Management of European Southern Lagoons under the influence of river-basin runoff
- Flood management
Scottish Government ClimateXChange project - Development of indicators on the rate of development in flood-risk areas
- Lake response to global environmental change
UK NERC (NE/J024279/1) GloboLakes Project - A global observatory of lake responses to environmental change, www.globolakes.ac.uk

Research Interests
My research interests focus on the creation and compilation of complex relational databases, and their exploitation and interrogation using GIS tools, spatial statistics, time series analysis, modelling and other appropriate research methods to study various environmental issues, such as the effect of climate change on aquatic systems and the impact of different scenarios of development on areas of concentrated human activities.
My main objective is to combine appropriate remotely sensed, measured and modelled data to answer scientific questions and provide the basis for effective decision making towards the sustainable management of the environment and conservation of biodiversity, allowing at the same time for human activities to take place and develop.
I have worked on marine, coastal and freshwater ecosystem change and I am greatly interested in interdisciplinary research, knowledge transfer and exchange.Previous and current research work in:
- Coastal areas, in particular Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) with the use of GIS, scenario testing and multicriteria analysis
- Remote sensing of aquatic systems, including lake water quality retrieval (water colour, temperature) in large European lakes, and land cover classification in UK lake catchments
- Lake system modelling, such as water balance in the catchment, and lake basin morphometry (mean/max depth, volume) and retention time
- Interaction and linkages between the human, terrestrial and aquatic landscapes
- Understanding drivers of environmental change and their impacts on aquatic systems at global scales
- The past (analysis of trends and patterns in various environmental parameters based on archives of remote sensing data and field measurements), the present (current ecosystem mapping and status assessment), and the future (development of methods for long-term ecosystem status monitoring, and response to future drivers of change)
