Research Profile

F. Jerry Reen

Biography

Dr. F. Jerry Reen did his BSc in Biochemistry at the National University of Ireland Galway. He subsequently pursued a PhD in the Molecular GlycoBiotechnology Group at NUIG, having being awarded both an Enterprise Ireland Scholarship and an NUI Teaching Fellowship. Upon completion of this work in Oct 2002, Jerry took up a PostDoctoral position in the lab of Dr. E. Fidelma Boyd in the Department of Microbiology at UCC. During that time he was a visiting scientist at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, San Diego, USA and was awarded an IRCSET Postdoctoral Fellowship to study bacteriophage-host interactions in Vibrio cholerae. Jerry subsequently took up a lecturing position (fixed term) in the School of Microbiology, while also joining the BIOMERIT Research Centre where he begun to develop an interest in small molecule research and host-microbe interaction in chronic disease. In 2011, he won the inaugural Science Foundation Ireland TIDA ‘Dragons Den’ and was hosted in Silicon Valley, San Jose by the Irish Technology Leadership Group. He has since won several additional awards for his research and has published over 70 peer reviewed scientific papers (h-index 23). Jerry has been a Lecturer in Molecular Microbial Ecology in the School of Microbiology since 2017. His research interests are in polymicrobial-host interactions in chronic lung disease and marine biocatalysis.

Research Interests

Throughout my research career I have developed a strong interdisciplinary background in biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry, and bioinformatics. This experience has resulted in several interdisciplinary collaborations being established with colleagues from other Schools within UCC and further afield, links which I am keen to continue to develop going forward. Deciphering the common signatures that define distantly related organisms provides a unique perspective on the dynamic interactions that govern their co-existence. From a translational perspective, developing a network of compounds that modulate cellular behaviour provides the template for a synthetic diversity approach that is being used to develop antagonistic compounds for drug development.

Small molecule signalling in microbial communities: The foundation of microbial behaviour, whether the expression of virulence, persistence through community formations called biofilms, or the expression of novel biosynthetic gene clusters and natural products, is governed by cell-cell communication. The emergence of technologies that enable us to appreciate and investigate the microbial communities that colonise diverse ecological and clinical niches has led to a new understanding of disease progression. The lungs, previously considered a sterile environment periodically colonised by harmful pathogens, are now known to carry a rich and diverse microbial community. Deciphering the cell-cell communication systems that govern the interactions between these diverse species is key to delivering innovative and effective new therapies for disease management. Interactions between established and emerging pathogens is of particular interest. A major part of this discovery based programme is the development of systems-based approaches and appropriate models in which to study microbial behaviour. This will lead to a better understanding of microbial pathogenesis during infection, in light of the diversity within the polymicrobial communities that exist in these ecological niches.

Chemico-biological therapeutics:
As the age of the global population continues to increase year on year, the challenges in maintaining health and quality of life (QoF) continue to exercise the commercial and academic communities. We are and will continue to live longer, and this brings with it its own challenges. Antibiotic-based therapies are under severe pressure due to the continuing emergence of resistant pathogens, while conventional therapies are limited by their target specificities. Furthermore, off target effects of large biologics has led the search for more specific molecular based therapeutics. My research interests lie in pursuing chemico-biological molecular approaches to identify and develop small bioactive molecules. This then provides the basis with which to underpin innovations in therapeutic developments, new biotechnological developments, and next generation solutions, primarily for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and medical device industries. Furthermore, these natural products also address the environmentally conscious end-user market need for eco-friendly and safe therapeutics.

(Post)Transcriptional regulatory systems:
Signal perception and transduction through tightly coordinated circuits is integral to the survival and persistence of microbes in diverse ecological niches. The capacity of microbes to adapt to changes in the environment is central to their ability to thrive under adverse circumstances. Signal dependent transcriptional regulators are a key mechanism through which microbes assimilate environmental cues and mediate the appropriate adaptive response. By far the largest class of transcriptional regulator is the LysR-class, which is universally distributed among bacteria, archaea, and even eukaryotic organisms. The number of LysR-Type Transcriptional Regulators (LTTRs) varies among species with one of the largest repertoires encoded in the genome of the nosocomial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. I am interested in understanding the evolutionary basis for the emergence of this class of transcriptional regulator, and elucidating the hierarchical network that underpins their control of virulence and pathogenesis in nosocomial pathogens.
