Research Interests

Cover a broad range of topics, mainly on wild mammal epidemiology, biodiversity and ecology in Ireland and Britain. At present interested in biodiversity and health, especially diversity of diet, and health.

Specific projects at present include:

(1)  Developing management and research options for bovine tuberculosis in wild badgers. With James O’Keeffe of the Wildlife Section of the Department of Agriculture.Stuart Green of Teagasc, Professor Wayne Martin of University of Gulph Canada, and Professor John Davenport of BEES UCC, supervised PhD student Andrew Byrne (see publications). Attached to the Centre for Veterinary Risk Analysis  at University College Dublin run by Professor Simon More as well as the Badger Vaccine Project there run by Dr Eamonn Gormley with a current PhD student Deirdre Buckley and visiting veterinarians Dr Leigh A.L. Corner (New Zealand) and Professor Wayne Martin (Canada). Interested in sett re-colonisation of the Duhallow Area in North Cork and have had some co-operation with IRD Duhallow with counting badger as they emerge. Am interested in marking vaccine delivery more efficient by using trap alarms using mobile phone technology and perhaps call-data records (CDRS) to track movements of surveyors and those who deliver vaccines.

(2)  Island Badgers

For reasons not yet clear badgers found on off-shore islands in Ireland have never been found with TB. We have been investigating these for many years (see publications) as they provide opportunities for research on vaccine development and delivery. Am currently looking at diet of badgers on Rutland Island with Professor John Davenport. This will form a background for further interests in biodiversity and health (5).

(3)  Urban Otters

In Cork. With molecular laboratory run by Dr Catherine O’Rielly of Waterford Institute of Technology have estimated the number of wild otters using Cork City in a year. This involves Citizen Science with Cork Branch of Irish Wildlife Federation

(4)  Origins of Ireland’s Biodiversity.

With Professor Peter Woodman of Department of Archaeology University College, Cork and Julia Davenport contributed and edited Mind the Gap. The next edition Mind the Gap II will appear in November 2014 edited by Jens & Nettan Carlsson of University College, Dublin

(5)  Biodiversity and health

There is currently a debate about how biodiversity and health interact.  There is a lecture on UTube  ‘Biodiversity and infectious diseases Towards One health’. Interested in exploring other examples for example with badger diet biodiversity and bovine tuberculosis
