Research Profile

Fidelma Butler

Biography

Fidelma Butler is a lecturer in the School of Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences at University College Cork. Fidelma has a PhD from University College Dublin (NUI).

Fidelma has worked in a variety of posts
1990-1992 Professional Assistant, National Museum of Ireland (Natural History)
1993-1995 Education Officer, National Conservation Education Centre
1996-2006 Ecological Consultant, Terrascope, Co. Cork
1996-2006 Continuing Adult Education, University College Cork (part-time)
2007 - present Lecturer, School BEES, UCC

Fidelma currently teaches on a number of modules in the fields of mammal ecology and ecological methods. She is also Director of the MSc Ecological Assessment and Diploma Field Ecology.

Interests and recent projects include small mammal ecology and behaviour (rodents and hedgehogs); habitat utilisation by bats; ecology of roads; urban ecology; behaviour of mammals in forested landscapes, deer in particular; invasive mammals with current work on grey squirrel.

Research Interests

Recent research is focussed on applied mammal ecology:

  • Assessment of the effectiveness of bat mitigation measures on national roads in Ireland. This work was funded by the National Roads Authority and represents the first attempt to assess the effectiveness of mitigation measures which are required under EU legislation. PhD supervisor

  • Ecology of the European Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus). This was supported by the Crawford Hayes bequest fund. Little work has been done on hedgehogs in Ireland and nothing is known of their ranging patterns or foraging habits. It has been suggested that their numbers are declining leading to concerns about Ireland's mammalian biodiversity. PhD Co-supervisor

  • Status of bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) in second rotation forests in Ireland. This work was funded by a commercial forestry company. Bank voles form a significant component in the diet of Hen Harriers. These birds of prey are themselves strictly protected under EU legislation and large areas of land have been designated for this purpose. The management of forestry within these areas and the resulting impact on bank voles is of significance to the status of the Hen Harrier. Supervisor
  • The effectiveness of mitigation measures for mammals (other than bats) on Irish national roads. This work was funded by the National Roads Authority and focuses on the planning and implementation of mitigation measures for mammals on Irish national roads. PhD Co-Supervisor

  • Spread of alien mammals. This was an IRCSET funded project examining the population dynamics of grey squirrels at the front of the invasion area. PhD Co- Supervisor
  • Potential of a managed wildlife park to act as a refuge for a native mammal. This IRCSET funded project investigated ecological aspects of the red squirrel at a major tourist attraction at FOTA wildlife park. Postdoctoral mentor

  • The interaction of deer and commercial forests. The aim of this work, funded by the Department of Agriculture, is to quantify deer population, habitat and silvicultural elements that influence local deer population densities and behavioural patterns that may lead to a higher risk of tree damage. PhD Co-Supervisor (x2); Postdoctoral mentor
