Research Profile

Paul Giller

Biography

Professor Paul Giller is a Zoologist and Ecologist  (graduated from Queen Mary and Imperial College, University of  London) having published over 130 papers and 7 books

(h-factor 41/30 Google Scholar/Web of Science; i10 index 100; Total citations 7211/3897 (as of December 2014)).

Prof Giller is a population, community and ecosystem ecologist with a specialisation in freshwater systems, macroinvertebrates and salmonids. Research expertise lies in pure and applied ecology and freshwater biology and the role of biodiversity on ecosystem function (in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems). Research has centred on the analysis of macroinvertebrate communities of freshwater and terrestrial habitats; freshwater-forestry interactions (including biodiversity issues and the effects of forestry practices); the impact of instream (flooding) and catchment (land use changes) disturbances on stream and river ecosystems and freshwater pollution. Application of ecological and experimental techniques to applied animal behaviour has also led to collaborative research with agricultural research organisations.

He has taught and researched in the UCC for over 30 years, having also taught for short periods in the UK, USA and France. He has carried out research in Ireland, UK, South Africa, USA and Sweden. In addition to academic roles, he has held administrative positions including  Executive Dean of Science (2000-2005) and since May 2005  Registrar and Senior Vice President Academic , reappointed for a second term in 2010.

Research Interests

Professor Giller is an ecologist. Research expertise lies in population and community ecology, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, and freshwater biology. As a freshwater ecologist, he has specialised in the ecology and biology of streams and rivers including the analysis of macroinvertebrate communities; freshwater-forestry interactions (including biodiversity issues and the effects of forestry practices); fish diet and feeding strategies; the impact of instream (flooding) and catchment (land use changes) disturbances on stream and river ecosystems and freshwater pollution. More recently, research has concentrated on biodiversity-ecosystem function relationships in streams and rivers, particularly involving decomposition processes, the role of the riparian zone and food web structure. He also has extensive research interests in community ecology of terrestrial assemblages (particularly dung beetles and predatory coleoptera), the role of biodiversity on ecosystem processes and functioning in terrestrial (grassland) ecosystems and applied animal behaviour (working on the management and behavioural ecology of dairy cattle).

Research Funding has been successful, with the attraction of in excess of €4 million project funding to UCC from international and national grant-awarding bodies. Funding sources include EU (Integrated Plant Protection, FAIR, Environment and Climate, FP4, FP5), Enterprise Ireland, COFORD, The Heritage Council, Leverhume Trust, Coillte, TEAGASC, EPA. I have coordinated the Biodiversity Evaluation and Ecosystem Functioning strategic research area of a successful bid to the Higher Education Authority in Ireland PRTLI programme for the establishment of a €13.3 million Environmental Research Institute in UCC, which included over €1.3 million for projects in the Biodiversity strategic area.

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

Prof Giller is a very experienced university teacher at undergraduate, postgraduate (MSc, PhD) and adult and continuing education (Certificate and Diploma) levels, in a wide range of ecological, biological, environmental and zoological topics, not only at UCC (across a number of Faculties), but also at the University of London, at the Open University, at the University of Oklahoma USA and Universite de Pau et Pays de L’Adour in France.

I have played a very active and direct role in the development of undergraduate (bachelor) and postgraduate (Master) Degree and Diploma programmes and courses in Biological Sciences, Ecology and Environmental Science at Departmental and College/Faculty level in UCC.  I have also played a leading role at the University level in curriculum and strategic development.

Undergraduate teaching experience:

  • Teaching expertise lies in population and community ecology, behavioural ecology, invertebrate biology, freshwater biology and field courses.

  • Major and initiating role in Departmental developments in the environmental area, with the introduction of many new undergraduate modules, the redesign of others, and the development of field courses at home and abroad.

  • Leading role in the design and establishment of the BSc in Ecology. The degree commenced in 1992/93 and is still the only ecology degree in the country. It is seen to serve the growing interest and career openings in environmental biology and ecology.

  • Active role in the development of curricula in the overall Biological Sciences and Earth Sciences programmes and led the development and implementation of Modularisation across the Science Faculty.

  • Initiated and co-ordinated the original ERASMUS student mobility links and programmes at UCC in Aquatic Ecology involving The Netherlands and Norway; a larger programme in Biology with the UK, Italy, Belgium, France and Spain and helped establish a programme in fisheries with the UK, Spain, Greece and Portugal.

  • Key role in the development of the new interdisciplinary BSc in Environmental Science degree which commenced in October 2000.

  • The development of the Early Start ‘Irish Ecosystems’ programme for JYA students.

  • The development and establishment of Joint bachelor and masters degrees in Architecture with Cork Institute of Technology

Postgraduate teaching:

  • Leading role in the development of an inter-institutional, interdisciplinary, postgraduate Masters course in Ecosystem Conservation and Landscape Management. This was run jointly by University College Cork and National University of Ireland Galway. It involved a number of Departments and periods abroad (3-3.5 months) at the University of Helsinki, Finland and the Universities of Nijmegen and Utrecht, The Netherlands. The programme also involved the Dutch Dept of Nature Conservation.  This MSc course ran over a six year period from January 2000 and received significant Socrates funding for further curriculum development.

  • Member of the teaching staff on the Universite de Pau et Des Pays de L’Adour / UFR Sciences et techniques de la Cote Basque, Anglet/Bayonne, France providing specialist expert teaching in freshwater ecology (streams and rivers) as an integral part of the curriculum of the Master Professionel Biologie Specialite Dynamique des Ecosystemes Aquatiques programme, covering an overview of stream and river ecology in the context of river management and conservation. The Masters Programme is accredited by the French Government and achieved an evaluation grade of A in the last national evaluation process

Adult and Continuing Education

  • Initiated and led the development of the Adult Education/Department of Zoology an Animal Ecology Certificate and Diploma courses in ‘Field Ecology’. The courses commenced in 1993 and combined distance learning with residential field courses and project work catering for both professional biologists and interested and committed amateurs with an intake of between 35-45. The courses have been self-financing and the Diploma is recognised for credit by the Open University as equivalent to one Module of a degree (1/6th of a BSc).
  • A more specialist the Certificate in  Biodiversity Components of Forestry was also established to support the forestry industry in Ireland.

International education:

  • Prof Giller has played a major role in the establishment of strategic partnerships with international universities particularly in China
  • Established dual, joint and collaborative programme development with universities in China and Singapore, The Netherlands and Finland. This has been targeted at academic areas and programmes from across the University.

  • Initiated and co-ordinated ERASMUS/Socrates student mobility links and programmes at UCC in Aquatic Ecology and Zoology involving The Netherlands (Nijmegen) and Norway (Bergen); a larger programme in Biology with the UK, Italy, Belgium, France and Spain and helped establish a programme in fisheries with the UK, Spain, Greece and Portugal.

    PhD supervision

  • Prof Giller has supervised to completion 27 PhD students in topics ranging from freshwater population and community ecology, terrestrial community ecology and behavioural ecology.

  • He has also supervised 9 research masters students in similar topic areas
