Biography

Dr Pádraig Whelan has carried out research and teaching in the areas of aquatic and terrestrial botany and ecology.  His early research was on Irish marine algae followed by seagrass (Zostera marina).  He was Chief Scientist at the Charles Darwin Research Station in the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) where he oversaw research activities that were carried out by scientists and students in the research station. His work led to the initiation of a process that established an inspection and quarantine system for the Islands so as to avoid the entry of alien species.  Subsequently he moved to Amazon region in Brazil where he worked on the establishment of a research station.  His teaching and research in Ireland are concerned with biodiversity conservation and invasive alien species.  Research has been carried out in a number of Irish protected areas (Burren, Glenveagh and Killarney National Parks, Glengariff Wood nature reserve) and others.  In the wider countryside, Dr Whelan's research seeks to promote biodiversity conservation in highly applied and innovative ways.  He has supervised a number of M.Sc. and PhD students on such varied topics as road ecology, remote sensing of crops, honey bees and seagrasses.

Research Interests

My research uses fundamental research to underpin highly applied management of a) alien species and b) endangered species and habitats. Most of the research takes place in protected areas (whether abroad, formerly, or, now, in Ireland) the Burren National Park (especially with respect to management of vegetation by large herbivores); the management of Glengarriff Nature Reserve and Killarney National Park (with respect to management and control of the alien Rhododendron ponticum); the conservation of the rare plants Tuberaria guttata and Taxus baccata in Ireland; and, the potential for more sustainable and conservation-oriented planting schemes on national road construction projects and waste treatment plants. Other aspects of my research are in terrestrial and marine biology conservation research (rare toad habitat conservation, ecology of seagrasses, non-conventional wildlife protection habitats. The strategy has tended to migrate toward team research with members of very different complementary skills. The ¿client¿ for most of the results of the research I supervise (or co-supervise) are conservation organisations. The impact of the research is mainly at a national (Irish)-regional (UK) level but the research into road planting has a European impact.

Teaching Interests

In my teaching I try to: a) instil a sense of discovery about what is being learned, so I don’t provide all the answers; b) introduce a topic by referring to something in a student’s own experience; c) approach the topic in more than one way; and d) provide  personal context for the material I present, from my own life and research experience.

In terms of Research-Led Teaching, the following is an outline of the way that research that postgraduates and I carry out, is translated into teaching:

EV1002 alien species lectures include information from taught MSc research projects on invasive alien seaweed; AE3014 information on class fieldtrip from Fionnuala O'Neill's PhD and John Devaney’s PhD research as well as final year undergrad research projects on invasive alien species biology/ecology of Killarney National Park; AE3016 aquatic macrophytes lectures include information on invasive alien seaweeds and seagrasses from taught MSc research projects; BL3001/EV3002 – themes for lit reviews based on SIMBIOSYS project and NRA funded research; BL4001/EV4001 – themes from research projects arise from SIMBIOSYS and NRA funded research; AE4012 Burren National Park management field trip includes a considerable portion of the day on the work by PhD graduates Dr Dolores Byrne and Dr Ruth Enright; AE4015 lectures and fieldtrip on invasive alien species module includes research from taught MSc research projects, the SIMBIOSYS project, Emer Walker’s MSc research project.
