Tobacco Control
Pilot Tobacco Control interventions in three Secondary Schools in Cork City in conjunction with the Health Promotion Unit in Cork [Ms Denise Cahill].
Ms Cahill and I have proposed a pilot tobacco intervention incorporating social marketing principles. This project has been deferred until September 2009.

Impact I have had on the discipline:
This SmoFri Study and All Ireland Bar Study provides some of the first evidence of the impact of smokefree workplace legislation on smoking behaviour and respiratory health.
Scarce research exists on risk perception of smoking and in particular risk perception of secondhand smoke.
To date no study has examined qualitatively the social consequences of a smokfree workplace legislation for both smokers and non-smokers. The implications and use of social marketing principles for behaviour modification is in its infancy in Ireland. This to the best of my knowledge the first piece of research incorporating social marketing principles into a programme intervention for behaviour change.

On March 29th 2004, the Republic of Ireland introduced the first nationwide ban on workplace smoking including bars and restaurants in the EU. The focus of this measure was to protect worker health by reducing exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS).

This SmoFri study and All Ireland Bar Study provides some of the first evidence on the impact of smokefree workplace legislation on the health of an occupational group most effected by the legislation namely bar workers. These studies also provide first evidence of the effectiveness of these tobacco control measure on smoking behaviour.
o We provided the first estimates of smoking prevalence among bar workers in Ireland or worldwide.
o We also provide some of the first evidence of effectiveness of a national smokefree legislation on changes in smoking behaviour affected workers in general, and hospitality industry workers in particular.
