Biography
I qualified in Dentistry from UCC in 1960. After engaging in General Practice in the UK and in the Public Dental Service in West Cork I joined the University Dental School & Hospital in Cork in 1967 when I was appointed Assistant Lecturer in Preventive Dentistry and Assistant Director of Special Studies on dental caries and fluorides which was established at that time by the Department of Health. I obtained my PhD in 1971 being the first dentist in Ireland to obtain a doctoral degree. In 1972 I was appointed Lecturer in Preventive & Paediatric Dentistry in the University of Manchester (1972-1978). In addition to teaching both Undergrads and Postgrads I worked in the internationally famous Dental Health Research Unit specialising in the design of clinical trials of caries preventive agents and procedures. I returned to Ireland in 1978 when I was appointed Chief Dental Officer in the Department of Health in Dublin (1978- 1982). In this position I advised the Minister, the Civil Service and the Health Board on oral health policy. I returned to UCC in 1982 being appointed Senior Lecturer in Preventive and Paediatric Dentistry in the Cork Dental School & Hospital. In 1983 I established the Oral Health Services Research Centre which is now one of the biggest research centres in Europe and has been responsible for mentoring many students for doctoral and masters degrees. Many of those who have worked in the Research Centre now occupy senior academic and research positions in Dentistry.Research Interests
My main research interest has been and is the epidemiology of oral diseases and conditions. I have published many papers related to this topic including the design of studies, the innovative methods of measuring dental caries and enamel fluorosis.
