Biography

Research Interests

Research carried out from the mid-1970’s till the present has aimed to improve the ability of the architectural profession to design a high quality, more sustainable built environment. This goal has been approached from several directions: from testing novel applications of technology; contributing to design process theory; empirical investigation of the potential and impact of new representational media on the design process; testing, dissemination and application of the principles and tools of bioclimatic design; and  analysis of the thermal performance of architecture. These contributions to the development of sustainable architecture have been acknowledged in the last fifteen years through appointments to international scientific committees, and invitations to act as a keynote speaker/rapporteur. In terms of design products and the constructed environment, the positive impact of the research activity is reflected in the award of joint First Prize in the RIBA International Competition for the Design of a Sustainable School (with C. Stansfield Smith and J. Pardey, 2001), and citation in both professional (AJ) and popular (Channel 4’s Grand Designs) journals for Sellers House (2003, 2005), for which he was the environmental consultant. The intelligent environment conceptual work has found architectural expression in the Portsmouth Smart Homes, opened in 2004. (The latter schemes arose from collaborations with John Pardey Architects)

 

In addition, the development and dissemination of research methodologies appropriate for design students and the architectural profession, which was initially a means to another end, has in itself been recognised internationally as being a significant impact on both the academies of architecture, and also in the development of new forms of professional practice. Personal impact in this area has been recognised by invitations to run intensive training sessions for doctoral students, and to contribute to the development of international initiatives in architectural doctoral colleges in Nordic and Baltic countries, and invitations to serve on the scientific committee of the EURAU conferences which have sought to raise the status and recognition of architectural research.

 

To be more specific, work from 1996 – 2012, has made a contribution to the developing technologies of the Smart Home/Intelligent Building concept, and to the adaptation of the design process to facilitate the exploitation of interactive technologies in architecture. This led to inclusion in a team of over 60 researchers working to establish a national centre of excellence, on the NEMBES project funded with a multi-million PRTLI-IV grant. Earlier work led directly to the construction of the Portsmouth Homes for tenants with severe constraints on limb mobility, and was publicised through exhibitions, a BBC Television feature, the Financial Times and in specialist and local press. The Portsmouth work has also been presented to the scientific community through a cited, refereed journal paper, and 12 refereed conference papers The originality of the approach has been recognised in the comments of the scientific referees to the joint American/European EAAE/ARCC architectural research conference in 2008. The contribution was also recognised through the financial support of the Housing Corporation’s Innovation and Good Practice Grant of £105,000 and University of Portsmouth, which devoted £70k to developing the design process work in 2005, and a bursary for a doctoral student to contribute to the area. 

 

Work from 1980-96 developed and tested new models of the architectural design process, and investigated the means of influencing the process through presentation of technical information in different formats and media. This work focussed particularly on ways in which designers could design more climatically-responsive, energy-efficient architecture and laid the foundation for later empirical investigation of the effectiveness of bioclimatic design and learning tools. The seminal icon model developed in my doctoral thesis (1985) was cited and explained by Prof. Powell in Design Studies, 8.4, 1987, and in CPD seminars by the BRE. Work in the areas of architectural video and interactive media has been cited internationally.

 

Work from 1975 – 1980 was a contribution to the development and diffusion of practical techniques for integrating solar water heating in housing in Europe. The impact is indicated by the international demand for the book “Practical Solar Heating” (1978) which was translated into five languages, and the adaptation of the original text to suit distinctive characteristics of climate and/or construction in the USA and the Netherlands. Illustrations from the book have been reproduced in books by some of the most influential authors on sustainable architecture e.g. Prof. Brenda and Robert Vale (1980), and Prof. Roaf’s Eco House II (2003), marking an impact across three decades.
