Research Profile

Biography

Senior Lecturer,
Business Information System,
Cork University Business School,
University College Cork.

Research: My research focuses on the introduction, sustained use and ethical implications of information systems in healthcare (focusing on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)3 - Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages; SDG9 - Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation and SDG16 - Promote Just, Peaceful and Inclusive Societies). This involves considering how health care is delivered and how it might be improved by introducing IS; identifying barriers and facilitators to mHealth pre- and post-implementation; investigating the decision making process of both direct and indirect users of digital health; exploring health-related outcomes associated with clinical decision support systems, examining digital health from a developed and developing world context and investigating the electronic consent (eConsent) process of online fora, including those who are living with dementia. I have contributed to the extension of existing theories focusing on Health Information Systems implementation. I have delivered several presentations at international and national conferences and has published in high impact peer-reviewed journals in the Health Informatics and Information Systems domains. I currently serve on the Editorial Board of three journals - Health Policy & Technology, International Journal of Reliable and Quality E-Healthcare and Frontiers in Digital Health.

Learning and Teaching: I delivering a range of technical, non-technical and applied modules to various class sizes, ranging from 8 to 180 student participants across undergraduate, postgraduate and executive education programmes. My innovative and engaging approach to learning and teaching resulted in being nominated as a Teaching Hero as part of the 2020 national student-led Teaching Hero awards led by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning and the Union of Students in Ireland. The Teaching Hero Awards are national, student-led awards for all those who teach in higher education. The Awards are organised by the National Forum in collaboration with the Union of Students in Ireland and other students’ unions nationwide. They provide an opportunity for students across the country to recognise and celebrate outstanding teaching in our higher education institutions. I directed two interdisciplinary PG courses - MSc Management Information and Managerial Accounting Systems (MSc MIMAS) and MSc Digital Health programmes (September 2017 - July 2021). During this time, several contributions to the planning, design and development of courses were performed to ensure that the courses were maintained in terms of academic currency and industry regulations/standards.

Academic Citizenship and Engagement: I am an active member on several committees at Local, School, College and University Levels (linked with the University's strategic values such as Athena Swan Committee, Ethical Review Committee and Learning and Teaching Committee). I work closely with industry and the community to understand their needs and propose solutions to overcoming these needs. I actively participate in public engagement initiatives (e.g. print and online media output, student recruitment activities) to promote our programmes and research projects, Business School and University.

Research Interests

Research: My research focuses on the introduction, sustained use and ethical implications of information systems in healthcare (focusing on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3 - Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages; SDG9 - Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation and SDG16 - Promote Just, Peaceful and Inclusive Societies).

I have also been lead UI/UX analyst for a number of mobile health projects. This work involves prototyping and designing graphic user interfaces (GUIs).

I am a reviewer for top journals and conferences; namely, Journal of Medical Internet Research, European Conference of Information Systems, International Conference of Information Systems, European Conference on Information Management and Evaluation and International Conference on Mobile Business.

I have experience working on a range of large, national and international funded projects. I have successfully acquired funding from the Irish Research Council and the Wellcome Trust. My passion for research is reflected in my involvement with a number of interdisciplinary research projects within the Health Information Systems Research Centre (HISRC), UCC. I collaborate with academics nationally and internationally. Furthering extending my collaboration network, I am also a member of the 'Aging' Cluster in UCC.

My research strategy is driven by my desire to make societal impacts. I continuously build on my existing research skills and continue to publish in high quality, peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

Presentations at the following conferences, nationally and internationally: Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, USA (virtual presentations – Jan 2020); European Conference on Information Systems (Portsmouth, UK  26th-29th June 2018; Guimarães, Portugal, 5th -10th June 2017; Münster, Germany 2016; Utrecht, Netherlands 2013); Americas Conference on Information Systems, Boston, USA (9-12th August 2017); Third European Technology Assessment Conference,University College Cork, Ireland (17th-19th May 2017); Conference on Information Systems, Dublin, Ireland (11th - 14th December 2016); Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems, Chiayi, Taiwan (27th June - 1st July 2016); International Conference on Health and Social Care Information Systems and Technologies, Portugal (Porto: 5th-7th October 2016; Troia 15th – 17th October 2014); International Conference on Mobile Business (Paris, France, 19th-20th November 2015; Como, Italy 20th-21st June 2011) and International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology (DESRIST), Dublin, Ireland, 21st -22nd May 2015. Top 2 conferences in Information Systems, according to the Association of Information Systems, (International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) and European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS)). ICIS and ECIS have an average acceptance rate of 28% and 30% respectively (acceptance rate varies annually).
