Research Profile

Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer in Design Thinking Pedagogy and Praxis in the School of Education at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. I have over 20 years of educational experience working in a variety of countries and settings including Japan, China, Vietnam, Chile, the UK and Australia. My passion is for learning and teaching which is inspired by creativity, play and a growth mindset. I have published extensively on inclusive, learner-focused approaches to teaching, learning and assessment and innovations in learning spaces. My current work includes creative, hands-on approaches to teaching and learning in higher education through Lego Serious Play and ‘Art thinking’ – a fusion of design thinking with artistic practice.

I
hold a PhD in Education, awarded in 2013, from Monash University Australia, the focus of which was inclusion and access for international students with a disability at one university in Australia. My research publications to date have focused on inclusive education from a Bourdieuian perspective and issues around student peer mentoring in higher education. I have extensive experience in the use of learner-centred pedagogical approaches to curriculum and assessment, developing innovative resources for both face-to-face and blended delivery modes, and in delivering professional development in higher education.

Teaching Interests

Originally trained in TESOL (Teaching English as a Second or Other Language) I have taught in Japan, China, Vietnam, Ireland, the UK, Chile and Australia. My interests include learner-centred pedagogical approaches to curriculum and assessment, developing innovative resources for both face-to-face and blended delivery modes, and professional development in higher education.

My research publications to date have included inclusive education from a Bourdieuian perspective and issues around student peer mentoring in higher education.

Current research interests are around how technology enhanced learning can be conceptualised from a SoTL perspective and embedded into professional development for academics. I am also interested in how learning spaces can act as a catalyst to transform learning and teaching practices in higher education.
