Biography

Helen Lynch is a senior lecturer in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, is a world federation of occupational therapy [WFOT] qualified Occupational Therapist and was awarded her PhD in 2012. She also has a Diploma in Montessori Education from the St. Nicholas College in London, a postgraduate award for Advanced Sensory Integration from the University of Liverpool, and a masters in science in advanced therapy practice from UCC. She was appointed as an Royal Irish Academy scholar, 2017 and is currently Co-PI for a Horizon2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie European Joint Doctorate Programme grant: P4play.

Background:
Helen worked for 20 years in paediatric services in Cork as senior Occupational Therapist and Manager of Occupational Therapy services in a variety of centres, specialising in developmental coordination disorder (DCD), environmental access, sensory integration, and occupational development. In collaboration with parents and health professionals, she was instrumental in the development of a unit in Cork for children with developmental coordination disorder: the DCD Unit. For 10 years, she led the Irish team in teaching and mentoring students on post-professional masters modules in sensory integration for the S.I.Network UK and Ireland. She was successful in winning a scholarship for the national Clinicians in Leadership Programme run by the health services (2000-2002).

In 2004 she joined the Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy in UCC as full-time lecturer and Director of Brookfield Occupational Therapy Clinic. She designed and coordinated the second year Occupational Therapy programme, focusing on early and middle childhood and teenagers and went on to redesign and deliver the 3-year research modules for the inter-professional education strand across Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy.  She was Year Four coordinator  for the undergraduate programme, and has been Director of the Postgraduate programme since 2011. In 2007, Helen won the UCC President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and was a member of Academic Council 2015-2017.

Currently Helen is co-convenor of ISS21 Children and Young Peoples cluster, a member of the steering group of the UCC Futures Children initiative, a member of the steering group of Cork Child Friendly Cities, and of Lets Play Cork. She has been an Irish representative for the European Network of Therapists in Higher Education, and for the national Disability Access programme for third level students. She has been an advisor during COVID-19 for the Department of Children [DCEDIY] in relation to the establishment of Lets Play Ireland, and is a panel facilitator for the National Participation Office for children's' participation in decision-making. She is a strong advocate for engaged research with children and communities to effect change for societal gain.

Research Interests

Helen's interests are in occupational science as it relates to children's rights to play, environments and outdoor play. She is currently exploring children's participation in outdoor play is involved in a number of projects exploring inclusive outdoor play environments: school yards and local playgrounds. Helen was one of two Irish representatives on the European COST project for play and children with disabilities (Ludi). She is now Co- Principle Investigator on a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Horizon2020 Innovative Training Network, P4play, developing an occupational science PhD programme focused on the study of play and social inclusion.
Helen's PhD research explored indoor and outdoor learning environments in children under 2 years, with special focus on children's use of objects and spaces within the home environment. This study was commissioned by the Irish Centre for Early Childhood Development and Education (CECDE) under the National Children's Office.
