Research Profile

Biography

The core theme of my research is uncovering how various interaction mechanisms affect the electronic, thermal and optical properties of materials, and how they can be manipulated to obtain materials with improved properties for important technological applications. My main expertise is the theory
and modelling of material properties, and their effective use to interpret and guide experiments.

I obtained my PhD from the University of Leeds, UK in 2006, during which I worked on the optical and electronic transport properties of mid- and far-infrared lasers and detectors in magnetic fields. In my postdoctoral appointments at CEA-Grenoble, France, and University of California Davis, USA, I worked on understanding the mechanisms that limit the heat conduction in disordered nanotubes and SiGe nanostructured materials for thermoelectric applications.

Two years ago I was awarded a Marie Curie and Science Foundation Ireland Starting Investigator grant (€400K over 4 years) to set up a new research direction at the Tyndall National Institute on the theory of thermoelectric materials.

- Thermoelectric transport properties of bulk materials.

- Heat transport in bulk and nanostructured materials.

- Electron transport and optical properties of quantum-well based devices (quantum cascade lasers     and quantum well photodetectors).

- Electronic and optical properties of quantum dots.
