Research Profile

Biography

Dr. Lynette Keeney is a Senior Researcher and Royal Society-Science Foundation Ireland University Research Fellow in Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, focusing on the synthesis and understandings of room temperature multiferroic thin films. She is an inorganic chemistry graduate from National University of Ireland, Galway (PhD 2005), where she won five University awards. Before joining Tyndall in 2008, she worked as a Chemist in industry (Charles River Laboratories, Pre-clinical Services, Montreal Inc.). She continues to engage with industry on projects involving multiferroic materials development for data storage applications e.g. via a Science Foundation Ireland technology innovation award (2014) and through direct funding from Intel Corp. (2016). Dr. Keeney is a member of the International Advisory Board of ECAPD (European Conference on Applications of Polar Dielectrics), is Tyndall-UCC representative on the Microscopy Society of Ireland Council and is a panel reviewer for Royal Society proposal applications. She was an Irish representative for the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) Action MP0904 (Single and multiphase ferroics and multiferroics with restricted geometries (SIMUFER)). Dr. Keeney is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC) and is member of the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control Society. She was a session organiser and committee member for the IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology (Cork, 2018, approx. 400 delegates) and was local organising committee member for the International Symposium on Integrated Functionalities (Dublin, 2019). Dr. Keeney actively engages in public outreach activities e.g. school visits, work experience programmes, public events and has been invited to receptions (2016 and 2019) hosted by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins and Mrs. Sabina Higgins, to mark International Women’s Day. In 2015 Dr. Keeney was awarded a prestigious Royal Society/Science Foundation Ireland University Research Fellowship for her research project: 'Memories are made of this: Multiferroics Research for Future Generation Memories' and she received the UCC Early Stage Researcher of the Year Award for 2015. Via her Royal Society Award and her recently awarded SFI Frontiers for the Future Project (2020), Dr. Keeney is expanding her research team to explore how sub-unit cell characteristics influence multiferroic behaviour and if these fascinating multiferroic properties can persist close to unit-cell thicknesses.

Research Interests

My field of specialisation is in materials science, particularly in the synthesis, understandings and optimisation of room temperature ferroelectric and multiferroic thin films for beyond CMOS data storage applications.
Our digital universe is doubling in size every two years. The International Data Corporation predicts that by 2020 it will contain nearly as many digital bits as there are stars in the observable universe! Multiferroic materials, possessing simultaneous electric and magnetic memory states, have been road-mapped as promising multi-state architectures for memory scaling beyond current technologies. No such devices currently exist however, as multiferroic materials with room temperature properties are extremely rare.
Based on my understandings of dielectric and magnetic materials and on my expertise in the synthesis of complex and advanced materials, I designed a material system (Aurivillius phase, Bi6TixFeyMnzO18) that exhibits multiferroic (ferroelectric and ferromagnetic) properties in a single homogeneous phase at ambient temperatures. Direct evidence for magnetic-field-induced ferroelectric domain switching at the nanoscale was demonstrated by using piezoresponse microscopy (PFM) under a variable magnetic field. Given that room temperature multiferroics are extremely scarce, development of this material has made noteworthy advances to the multiferroics field, resulting in Nature group publications (M. Schmidt, et al., Sci. Rep., 4, 5712 (2014); L. Keeney, et al., Sci. Rep., 7, 1737 (2017)) and a publication (L. Keeney, et al., J. of the Am. Ceram. Soc., 96 [8], 2339-2357 (2013)) which has been cited 114 times. My latest work demonstrates that the magnetic ions tend to congregate to the centre of the Aurivillius phase structure, aligning close to each other which would permit them to interact and create pathways for long-range magnetic order. Interestingly, the presence of sub-unit cell defects (stacking faults, out-of-phase boundaries) appears to further drive magnetic ions to the central layers. I am therefore eager to exploit this material and to address the intriguing research questions that this tantalising material opens up.

 Description

Host CEIA Transition Years in a 'hands on' materials science laboratory experiment.

Teen-Turn Mentor 2018

I have been active in various outreach activities including: volunteer helper during Discovery Exhibition, Science Week Ireland (2008-2012) activities and the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (2011-2012), Cork City Council/SFI Carnival of Science (2019), Cork Science Festival, Celebrate Open Science (2019). Participated in outreach activities including school workshops (2009-2020) and during Nano Week (2009). Gave a public talk on my research in the Blackrock Castle Observatory Science Café (2011). Gave an interview for ‘Science Spin’ magazine (2012), Silicon Republic (2016; https://www.siliconrepublic.com/careers/research-researcher-tyndall-ucc-cork) and the Irish Times (2019; https://www.irishtimes.com/business/innovation/better-data-storage-through-chemistry-1.3959109). In November 2015, I spoke at Tyndall-UCC's Careers in Chemistry event, which was sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The purpose of this careers session was to enthuse and inform students about the various career options available from studying chemistry and other sciences. Other outreach activity engagements include being a mentor for the HighTechElec Transition Year Work Experience Programme and by providing hands-on learning activities and support to this second level female students via the ‘Teen-Turn’ programme.
