Santosh Kulkarni

Biography

Dr. Santosh Kulkarni is a Senior Researcher/Team Leader for Power Magnetics at Tyndall National Institute, Cork, Ireland. He is working in the area of Magnetics for Power Supply on Chip/Power Supply in Package technologies. Currently, he is working on designing and developing high efficiency integrated magnetics for Power Supply on Chip (PSoC) or Power supply in package (PSiP) for both low and high power applications. To-date Dr. Kulkarni has won over €5M in research funding from National, International funding agencies and direct Industrial contracts. Dr. Kulkarni has been awarded the Science Foundation Ireland Starting Investigator Research Grant award in 2016 to develop his research in the area of bulk processed soft magnetic thin films for offline power applications. Dr. Kulkarni started the research programme on high power (>1kW) bulk magnetics for Power Supply in Package in 2012 at Tyndall. Here, he demonstrated high flux density thin film magnetics technology with Power loss density which is 3 times lower than best in class ferrites. Further, in the follow up Nanomaps programme he addressed the main challenge of developing a cheaper manufacturing technology (75% cost reduction over existing technology) for thin film magnetics through innovations in material compositions and processing technology. He has established a mini-supply chain for high power supply in package space within Ireland through his Nanomaps research programme. The supply chain includes magnetic component manufacturers (Nuvotem Talema) and power electronics companies (Eisergy, Excelsys) all based in Ireland. Presently, he is engaged with magnetic material manufacturers to bring this technology to market in next 12 months. His expertise in this space was recognized at APEC 2015 where he delivered an invited talk on Nanomagnetics for high power applications at the Nanotechnology Industry session. Further, his talk was published as a new article on how2power.com, where it received highest number of downloads for June 2015. Further, in low power supply research space, he is leading the activity on Passive technology development within EU funded ‘Powerswipe’ project with IPDiA, Tyndall and Infineon, Regensburg as partners. In this programme, he led the activity to deliver World’s smallest multi-phase dc-dc converter in package on a passive interposer with an efficiency of 90%. He is presently leading a team of 6 including Post Docs, Research Engineers and Post Grads. He is a member of Magnetics committee for the US based Power Suppliers Manufacturers Association (PSMA). He has so far published over 60 papers in journals and peer reviewed conference proceedings and a book chapter, with an h-index of 15 and total citations of 750, along with a patent (filed). The Power Magnetics technology developed by Dr. Kulkarni have been licensed to large multinational companies. He has worked on delivering technology and product prototypes to large multi-national companies including ON Semiconductors, Texas Instruments, Infineon, Bosch, Analog Devices, Tokyo Electronics limited.
