Tony Day

Biography

Professor Tony Day is Executive Director of the International Energy Research Centre (IERC), a partnership between the Irish Government, multi-national corporations, and local companies and SMEs. The IERC delivers industry led research into integrated demand side energy solutions, with the emphasis on outcomes leading to new commercial opportunities and business models. Prior to joining the IERC Tony was Energy Services Director at TEAM, a leading energy management software provider. Before that he was Professor of Energy in the Built Environment at London South Bank University, where he set up the Centre for Efficient and Renewable Energy in Buildings, and conducted a range of research and enterprise projects.

Tony specialises in building energy analysis and the application of low and zero carbon technologies in the urban environment. His research includes analysis of energy policy and performance of low carbon technologies, and he has extensive knowledge transfer activities with industry. Tony is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Energy Institute and CIBSE, and past Chair of the UK Solar Energy Society.

Environ/Carbon Trust, to categorise and collate the information and data arising from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme and the Low Carbon Buildings Accelerator, and design web-based acquisition framework.

Institute for Sustainability, to identify sources of data on residential low carbon retrofit projects in the UK.

EPSCR PhD CASE Award, with Brookfield Europe to evaluate the performance of building integrated wind turbines in Strata SE1 Tower, London.

UKERC PhD Studentship, a cross-disciplinary project to maximise the seasonal efficiency of a ground source heat pump installation by linking control strategies to occupant behaviour and expectation.

Lambeth Carbon Reduction Partnership, providing energy audits and monitoring and target analysis for 20 large organisations in Lambeth to reduce carbon emissions by 5% in 6 months. In association with the South Bank Employers Group and Carbon Descent Ltd.

Review of the impact of the energy policies in the London Plan on applications referred to the Mayor, Phase 3,  Greater London Authority. The third study of its kind to provide evidence for the forthcoming review of the London Plan. Includes analysis of as-built low carbon implementation.

Study to map the community heating provision in London – A project with the London Energy Partnership to identify existing community heating networks in London in order to provide comprehensive data and information for future energy providers.

Boiler data analysis in London, A project with the Greater London Authority to collate data on the size and type of boilers employed throughout London. This data will inform the London Emissions and Greenhouse Gas Inventory.

Low Carbon Cooling Guide – A project with the Greater London Authority to develop a building cooling systems hierarchy, and cooling emissions forecast for London.

Strategic Combined Heat and Power Study – A study for the South Bank Employers Group for a district wide CHP scheme funded by the London Development Agency.

Urban wind analysis – A joint project with the London Borough of Southwark to study the in-situ performance of two wind turbines (one horizontal and one vertical axis). The outputs include analysis of high frequency energy and wind data over three years, for one of the most comprehensive studies of small scale urban wind.

EU Framework 6 Concerto project – Ecostiler. Collaborative community energy implementation project with SEA-RENUE and London Borough of Lambeth.

GLA London Plan energy policy review – Phases 1 and 2. Two studies conducted between 2006 and 2008 reviewing the success of the Mayor’s energy policies.
