Biography

Bernadette Cronin lectures in Drama & Theatre Studies at the School of Music and Theatre, University College Cork where she served as head of department from 2014 - 2015. She has a BA, an MA (adaptation - novel to film script) and the Higher Diploma in Education from UCC, a PhD (contemporary German language post-dramatic theatre) from the University of Exeter, a Diploma in Acting from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and a Diploma in Translation (English/German) from City University London. She is a founder member of Gaitkrash Theatre Company. Recent performance collaborations include  Playing the Maids (Wales/Korea/Ireland/Singapore), a multi-disciplinary performance piece inspired by Jean Genet’s classic The Maids, which toured in Wales in 2015, and On an Island (Heir Island, West Cork, July 2017), a multi-media performance piece responding to Heir Island.

Research Interests

My research and teaching interests include the theory and practice of adaptation, actor training, contemporary German-language experimental theatre, the theatre of Bertolt Brecht, and performance practice-as-research. The latter research is conducted in the context of my performance work with Gaitkrash Theatre Company, of which I am a founder member.  My most recent international collaboration – Wales/Korea/Ireland/Singapore – went on tour in Wales in 2015. Playing the Maids is a multi-disciplinary performance piece inspired by Jean Genet’s classic The Maids.
