Research Profile

Aine O'Donovan

Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health at the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SoNM) and have 20 years experience in Healthcare and Higher Education. I have a Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing and a Bachelors in Nursing from Trinity College Dublin, and a MSc, PhD, and Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from University College Cork (UCC). I also have a Mini-MBA from the Irish Management Institute and have recently qualified as a professional coach with Aspire Coaching. Prior to beginning work in academia, I worked in both the private and public health sectors as a mental health nurse.
I was Director of Teaching and Learning in the SoNM for six years, overseeing teaching ands learning strategy,  curricula development, and programme approval processes,as well as devising and implementing guidelines and policies.   I am passionate about Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and I successfully led the SoNM application for their first Athena SWAN Bronze award for promoting gender equality. I also recently led the school Quality Review (2023-2024). I held the post of  Dean of Undergraduate Studies in the Office of the Deputy Present and Registrar for two years (2021-2023),during which time I led the implementation of a number of UCC's strategic goals and had a pivotal role in the institutional quality review by leading the self assessment on the quality of all taught programmes in the university.
I have led the Mental Health and Wellbeing research cluster for 10 years. My interests centralise on children, young people and marginalised groups, as well as, suicide, self-harm and the co-production of education, research, and policy with experts by experience using participatory methodologies. I have over 90 peer reviewed publications, a h-index of 29 and have received over €1 million in research grant funding.
I have a strong interest in authentic, inclusive and compassionate leadership, as well as team and capacity building. I am currently the academic lead in the implementation and monitoring of the HEA National Student Mental Health and Suicide Prevention  Framework and the deputy chair of the Mental Health and Well-being group as part of the Healthy Campus initiative, Aligning both health and education strategy (local, national and international level), with UN Sustainable Development Goals and our global societal challenges is of particular importance to me.

Research Interests

I lead the Mental Health and Well-being research cluster in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. My  interests focus on marginalised groups, self-harm, suicide and young people's mental health, with a specific interest in mental health service delivery. I have experience of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, participatory research and the conduct of systematic reviews. I have published extensively on the co-production of research and education with experts by experience.  I am passionate about moving beyond Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) research frameworks through genuine and authentic partnership due to the failure of PPI strategies to recognize the discriminatory, stigmatizing and power driven ideology they often embrace and their failure to challenge traditional orthodoxy and the nature of knowing. I am currently principal investigator on a number of funded research projects including; a study to explore the needs of first responders (Garda, Fire service, ambulance service, coast guard, community first responders, RNLI) when attended the scene of a suspected suicide; research to develop an employee wellbeing programme to reduce stress and build resilience among Customer Success Employees in Germany (UNIC); an educational interventions to reduce seclusion, restraint and restrictive practices in child and and adolescent mental health services based on trauma informed care; an exploration of the experiences of service users, their parent/guardians, General Practitioners and staff of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in Ireland; an evaluation of an online support programme for people experiencing suicidal ideation; and a  systematic review and concept analysis of lived experience in health care. Previous funded studies have included; a national project on suicide and self harm awareness among health professionals; an evaluation of peer group clinical supervision for nurses; an international study to implement, and ascertain the impact of, co-produced mental health education with experts by experience; and a systematic review on the prevention and management of sexual safety incidents in mental health, intellectual disability and older adult health care settings. I have published over 90 peer reviewed papers, have a h-index of 29 and have secured over one million euro in research grant funding. I sit on the editorial board for Issues in Mental Health Nursing and is referee for several journals including the Journal of Research in Nursing, Archives of Psychiatric Nursing, Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, International Journal of Psychiatric Nursing, European Psychiatry and Journal of Advanced Nursing
