Brent Miles

BIOGRAPHY

Dr Brent Miles completed his doctorate in Medieval Studies at the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto. He taught Celtic literature and Welsh at St. Michael's College, University of Toronto, and from 2005 to 2008 was an O'Donovan scholar at the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. Since 2008 he has been a Post-Doctoral Teaching and Research Fellow in the Department of Early and Medieval Irish at UCC, where he has taught Old Irish, Welsh and Celtic Civilization.

Research Interests

Brent Miles's principal field of research is the learned and vernacular languages of early medieval Britain and Ireland. His work has included examinations of the shared cultural background of Hiberno- and Anglo-Latin and editions of early poetry from Anglo-Saxon England. Since 2005, Dr Miles's principal research has been on the influence of classical Latin epic on medieval Irish literature, and classical studies in medieval Ireland. Since coming to UCC Dr Miles has additionally begun editorial work on the bilingual Hiberno-Latin/Middle Irish sermons of the Leabhar Breac, and has begun work on a new research project on narratives of British history and vernacular Welsh political prophecy.
