Margaret Murphy

Biography

Lecturer in Midwifery and BSc in Midwifery Programme Lead. Research area - pregnancy loss and pregnancy after loss including experiences of couples in pregnancy following stillbirth. 
  • Elected to the International Stillbirth Alliance Board in 2016 and elected Board Treasurer in 2017. Member of the ISA Bereavement Working Group, Prevention Working Group, and Stillbirth Advocacy Working Group. https://www.stillbirthalliance.org/board/
  • Member of the Lancet Stillbirths in High-Income Countries Investigator Group and contributed Irish stillbirth data to the 2016 Lancet Ending Preventable Stillbirth Series.
  • Experienced in qualitative and qualitative research methodologies particularly Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. Other research areas include lactation support and education, and teaching and learning in higher education. 
  • President of the Association of Lactation Consultants in Ireland 2012-2014 and sat on several national breastfeeding policy boards.
  • Registered Midwife, Registered General Nurse, and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Senior clinical experience and clinical credibility in all aspects of Midwifery, Neonatal Intensive Care and Adult Intensive Care.
  • Teaches modules across Undergraduate and Postgraduate Midwifery programmes as well as Higher Diploma in Public Health Nursing and multidisciplinary PROMPT Obstetric Emergency Programmes and Neonatal Resuscitation Programmes.
  • Facilitates clinical antenatal and postnatal breastfeeding education sessions for mothers and infants.

Elected to the Board of ISA in Sept 2016. Elected as Treasurer, September 2017. The Board of ISA oversees the work of the International Stillbirth Alliance (ISA), which is an alliance of member organisations and individual supporters working towards stillbirth prevention and improvement of bereavement care worldwide.
International Collaborator Stillbirth Centre of Research Excellence, Australia (2016-Present)
The Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth is a national collaboration addressing the neglected tragedy of stillbirth. Through a priority driven program, the Stillbirth CRE aims to reduce the rate of stillbirth and improve care for parents and families whose baby is stillborn.
International Stillbirth Alliance Scientific Advisory Committee Member (2015-2018) 
The ISA Scientific Advisory Committee worked to enhance international collaboration in the prevention of stillbirth and related adverse pregnancy outcome (including psychosocial outcomes) through facilitating collaboration in conduct and dissemination of high quality collaborative research. 
Peer Reviewer for the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR, UK) (2015-Present)
I am an expert midwife reviewer for the NIHR which is a large, multi-faceted and nationally distributed organisation. The NIHR people, facilities and systems represent the most integrated clinical research system in the world, driving research from bench to bedside for the benefit of patients and the UK economy.
Member of The Lancet Stillbirths In High-Income Countries Investigator Group (2014-2016)
Contributing Irish Stillbirth data to The Lancet Ending Preventable Stillbirth Series 2016. This was the first time that Irish data contributed to such an important global Series. Addressing the epidemic of stillbirths is recognised as an essential part of the post-2015 sustainable development agenda. A second Lancet Series of five papers on stillbirths offers a roadmap for eliminating, by 2030, one of the most neglected tragedies in global health today.

The purpose of the association is to promote the professional development, advancement and recognition of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) for the benefit of breastfeeding infants and children, mothers, families and the wider community. Involves sitting on several national bodies including the National Breastfeeding Committee which influences breastfeeding policy at a national level.

Teaching
Across all years of the BSc in Midwifery undergraduate programme, the Higher Diploma in Midwifery programme, and on the Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health Nursing. Preceptorship programmes to Registered Midwives employed by the Health Service Providers Multidisciplinary colleagues on the PROMPT Obstetric Emergencies and AAP Neonatal Resuscitation Programme.
Research Supervision of postgraduate minor theses and undergraduate literature and research projects.12 BSc Midwifery students for undergraduate literature reviews in year 3 and developing those literature reviews into research proposals in year 4. Supervision 32 postgraduate midwifery students who complete a literature review on an area of interest for NU5073 Evidence Based Midwifery Practice.

Contribution to the planning, design and development of courses Curriculum design and development completing the curriculum redesign and redevelopment seven years after the BSc in Midwifery commencement and enables us to consider the knowledge that has been gained over this time.  
Coordination the Post Graduate Diploma in Midwifery 2007/2008.
Teaching and learning; development of novel approaches; completed the Benchmark Course Portfolio as part of the Post Graduate Certificate/Diploma in Teaching and Learning (2009-2011)

Academic writing
for publications; support students in their submission of their course work for consideration at national conferences etc.  
         
Student Module Evaluations students get the opportunity to anonymously evaluate all of their modules at the end of the academic year. They are afforded the opportunity to comment positively and negatively on all aspects of the module and to offer suggestions for the future delivery of the programme content. Lecturer evaluations are routinely collect anonymous student evaluations of my teaching at the end of term. My teaching was also positively evaluated by the students for my Establishment in 2008.

On-going demand for the midwifery programmes Both the BSc Midwifery and Higher Diploma in Midwifery programmes are consistently, very highly sought after. The BSc Midwifery programme at UCC has ,time and again scored highly among national HEI institutions offering this programme across the country since its introduction in 2006.
