Research Profile

Susan Ryan-Cornet

Biography

Susan’s professional education happened on three continents: Australia, the USA and the UK (Europe).  Her graduating degree in 1981, from Sydney University, was a Bachelor of Applied Science in Occupational Therapy. Apart from the United States this was one of the first degree programmes in this profession throughout the world – an auspicious start!  After working for a period of years in India and in England she then took a Master’s degree in Gerontology and Occupational Therapy at Columbia University, USA (1989 – 91).  This degree was followed by a Doctorate about professional thinking and reasoning from The University of East London, England in the 1990’s.  Susan did this while working fulltime leading three programs at Master’s level: Masters in Paediatric Occupational Therapy, Masters in Occupational Therapy and Masters by Independent Study. Working at post-graduate level fed into many of the new ways of examining the occupational therapy profession:  the use of less formal language, qualitative research and the use of narratives to bring the human aspects of the profession into the heart of practice.  These very different international and educational experiences gave Susan a broad perspective on education as well as an extensive professional network in the health sciences with colleagues and postgraduate students.  Subsequent publications and research grants brought many of these colleagues into the teams she organized and led.

Occupational therapy and occupational science recognizes the importance of life experience both as a patient/client and as a therapist.  As a mature-aged student at the Sydney University programme Susan brought her experiences of living in Australia, England, India, Ireland and Malaysia as well as having brought up and self-educated four children.  These international and personal experiences brought a wealth of informal knowledge which she integrated into all aspects of her work: her own learning, working as a therapist and educating others at all levels.

Clinical / professional reasoning was at the heart of her postgraduate studies and teaching and this branched out into interests in reflection, adult learning, professional  competencies, evidencing practice and the integration of these aspects in later years.  Her work at The Education for Practice Institute, Charles Sturt University, Australia, led by Professor Joy Higgs, has given innumerable opportunities for self-development as well as the actual development of ideas into new ways of educating health professionals.  Susan is an Adjunct Professor at this Centre and has been for many years and this relationship continues.

Susan’s work at UCC (2001 – 2007) concentrated on setting up programmes in occupational therapy at all levels and these continue.  Her work at the University of Newcastle, Australia concentrated on gaining external grants that fed into the enhancement of the occupational therapy profession.  Her work on “Generation Y” students, now being championed by Caroline Hills at NUI Galway, sought to alter the presentation of professional education to be more in-line with 21st Century Learners using Blended Learning in particular. Susan is an Emerita Professor at University College Cork as well as a Conjoint Professor at The University of Newcastle, Australia.  Susan is an active member of the profession and she hopes to continue working with other like-minded therapists from the health professions.

* Cornet is her legal name but she is known as “Ryan” professionally.
