Research Profile

Thomas Doyle

Biography

Dr Tom Doyle is a Lecturer in Zoology in the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences at UCC. Tom is a marine biologist with expertise in gelatinous zooplankton ecology and animal biotelemetry. His research interests fall under two main areas:
Gelatinous zooplankton ecology: socio-economic impacts of jellyfish (e.g. aquaculture and fisheries interactions), jellyfish associated pathophysiology (inc. First Aid for treatment of jellyfish stings) and diet and trophic interactions of jellyfish.
Animal biotelemetry: deployment of satellite tags, data loggers and acoustic tracking devices on various species (elasmobranchs, sea bass, sunfish and leatherback turtles) to determine animal movements, migration patterns and behaviour.

Outreach Activities

 Description

I have >85 media outputs since October 2015 that have boosted the profile and reputation of the university. The most significant media outputs were:  7 Irish Times articles documenting my research.  Featured on RTE’s Six-One News warning swimmers about venomous jellyfish (2016).  Live TV broadcast about jellyfish on ‘Big Week on the Farm’ on RTE1 (2019).  10 minute segment on a popular science documentary ‘10 Things you should know’ (2020).  Feature article written about a paper I was co-author on in the New York Times (2018).  One of my research papers generated the largest ever international media attention for NUIG (where I was at the time) (2017).  Have featured on many wildlife documentaries inc. a 45-minute show about my research on BBC, 3 appearances on BBC’s Coast, and two episodes ‘Living the Wildlife’ (RTE).

Dr Doyle has actively engaged the media to increase the dissemination of his research and to raise the profile of the CMRC and UCC. For example, >50 articles have been written about his research in in local and national newspapers (inc. The Irish Times, The Examiner, The Sunday Tribune, BBC Wildlife Magazine) and he has made regular appearances on local and national radio (inc. Morning Ireland, The Mooney Show, Pat Kenny Show and Moncrieff). In addition to the print and radio media, Tom has featured in several wildlife documentaries, most notably a 45 minute programme entitled “Searching for Ireland’s giant sea turtles” which documented his attempt to satellite tag a leatherback sea turtle off Dingle. Tom has also featured in BBC’s Coast, RTE’s Wild Migrations and more recently he appeared in two episodes of Colin Stafford Johnson’s ‘Living the Wildlife’ TV Series (RTE).
