Dr Ian Pickup is currently Head of the Student Experience at University College, Cork, Ireland, where he has strategic and senior management responsibility for a range of functions. Before joining UCC, Ian held a number of leadership roles at the University of Roehampton in London, including Director of Sport and Wellbeing and Director of Student Affairs.  Ian was also Principal Lecturer in Education at Roehampton, where he was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in 2007.  Ian is an advocate for a holistic student experience and is currently developing thematic approaches to his team’s work at UCC.  Before embarking on a career in Higher Education, Ian was a secondary school teacher, professional rugby union player, coach and a sports development officer. He was the founder of 'Move,' an innovative sports-based social inclusion project which transfers life skills from the physical activity context to empower young people to engage with educational and vocational opportunities. Ian's work is not limited to the UK - he has supported NGO practitioners working in post-disaster contexts and was a partner in an EU (Comenius) Early Childhood Education project.
