BIOGRAPHY

David Harold Cox studied music at Birmingham University, UK, gaining BMus, MA and PhD degrees in 1967, 1968 and 1977, respectively. From 1970 to 1993 he was on the staff of the Music Department of Sheffield University. His appointment as Professor of Music at UCC dates from January 1994, and he lives in the village of Castlemartyr, Co. Cork. David is a composer, musicologist and performer. He has composed music for a wide variety of genres and has written extensively for percussion. In 1977 his Horn Trio was awarded first prize in the Stroud Festival International Composers' Competition. His recent music includes three works for carillon, which have been performed this year in The Netherlands, Australia and the USA. They are published in The Irish Carillon Book, available from Adrian Gebruers, Springfield, Cobh, Ireland. David's musicological work includes research on the music of Varèse (the subject of his PhD) and the work of American composers. His book on the composer Irwin Bazelon is published by Greenwood Press (click here for details). His performance activities include conducting and directing various 20th-century-music ensembles. David teaches a number of courses at UCC, involving studies that range from Mozart's operas to the avant-garde of the period 1945-70. He also teaches original composition, analysis and criticism, and aural training.
