Biography
I am the Head of the School of Education, a Senior Lecturer in PE and Sport Pedagogy and a Hasso-Plattner Institute-certified Design Thinking Coach. I am the Programme Co-Director of the new Human Capital Initiative PGDip for Innovation through Design Thinking which begins in October 2020. In April 2020, I founded the Global Design Challenge for Sport and Physical Activity. I am the current Secretary General of the international Association for PE at Higher Level (AIESEP). - In April 2020 I founded the #AIESEPConnect global networking and knowledge-sharing event. Later that month, I founded the Global Design Challenge for Sport and Physical Activity to crowdsource ideas for incubation - a reimagining of sport and physical activity during and post pandemic.
- In 2019, I co-founded WickED, a platform which uses design thinking to develop educational solutions to complex societal challenges.
- In 2011, I co-founded All Island All Active (AIAA), a multisectoral knowledge exchange platform which promotes physical activity amongst vulnerable groups on the island of Ireland through evidence-based practice. I co-developed the first Made2Move Club within university and communities using design thinking.
- In 2011, I co-founded the European Educational Research Association Network 18: Research in Sport Pedagogy and am currently a convener of this network.
- In 2009, I co-founded Physical Education Teacher Education Ireland to drive policy and curriculum change in PE teacher education.

All Island All Active Dr. Fiona Chambers and Professor Deirdre Brennan (University of Ulster) founded All Island All Active in November 2012. The new All Island All Active cross border body provides leading academics, practitioners, politicians, policy makers, parents, active sport participants and strategic industry partners a space to collaborate to develop common pedagogical (teaching and learning) strategies in Sport and Physical Activity settings across schools, clubs and communities on the Island of Ireland. It is argued that by working together through AIAA, we can be more effective in our shared aim of encouraging individuals and communities to become and remain physically active across the lifespan. This unique body of stakeholders have committed to a unified approach to the promotion of quality lifelong Sport and Physical Activity. Importantly, this enabling platform will enable stakeholders to pool their knowledge and expertise to develop effective evidence-based pedagogical strategies that can have genuine impact in supporting the public to initiate and maintain participation in Sport and Physical Activity throughout their lives. AIAA is distinct on the Island of Ireland in its commitment to innovative multidisciplinary and robust research shaped by the needs of public, private, community and voluntary sectors. A recent AIAA funding workshop rallied leaders from the Sport and Physical Activity industry responsible for inspiring, steering, funding, managing, coordinating, volunteering, researching and reporting on participation in Sport and Physical Activity. This engagement led to the design of a unified AIAA focus; ‘‘To improve levels of physical activity across the Island of Ireland through effective teaching and learning strategies: 12% increase in physical activity levels in 12 years. | |
Project Draíocht: I am a member of the UCC Steering Committee of Project Draíocht. The Project comprises a university hub of four universities - UCC, Cork Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology Tralee and Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, Connecticut. The hub, based on the Dingle Peninsula educates visiting students in the areas of Irish culture. I am currently developing a programme on The Culture of Irish Sport for this Project. | |

Teaching Interests
I am the Head of the School of Education, a Senior Lecturer in PE and Sport Pedagogy and a Hasso-Plattner Institute-certified Design Thinking Coach. I am an educational visionary and an academic leader who uses a human-centred, problem-solving mindset (design thinking) to innovate. I bring multiple and diverse stakeholders together to develop approaches that achieve our UCC goals in teaching, research and civic engagement. I am a maven, connecting people into powerful networks to enact educational change at third-level, schools and in the community. I have honed these skills over a 30 year career spanning a 6 year career as a senior bank official and 12 year career as a middle manager and a teacher of physical education, science and wellbeing. I believe that all scholarship must have impact. This professional goal is delivered through a focus on enhancing the learner’s experience in formal, non-formal and informal settings. My teaching, research and civic engagement focuses particularly on the areas of (a) Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, (b) Mentoring, and (c) Social Innovation.
