Research Profile

Biography

Research Interests

My research focuses on the development and failure of skilled behaviour, in complex everyday circumstances and laboratory tasks, and more recently on how enduring (e.g. genetic variation) and temporary (e.g. sleep disruption) circumstances influence performance in these settings. My reserach is currently funded by national (SFI, Road Safety Authority) and international agencies (US Air Force Office of Scientific Research and BBSRC).

The development of my research career since the award of my PhD in 1984 has been shaped by the employment I have had (principally MRC Applied Psychology Unit, Cambridge and University of Surrey) and the opportunities for collaboration which have presented themselves. Although I have made both strategic and tactical choices with regard to the development of my research career, my commitment to the experimental study of the cognitive underpinnings of everyday behaviours has been sustained throughout.

Having completed a highly experimental PhD and MA, I was well equipped for the methodological rigors working at APU presented, but less so for the theoretical rigor which is a hallmark of the APU and its particular approach to "applied psychology", which in essence attempts to understand the cognitive underpinnings of particular everyday activities (e.g. driving, HCI, watch-keeping, language production, memory etc) in particular groups whose performance might be limited in some way. As my APU career developed I began to isolate particular questions, learning in complex tasks, the role of attention and working in controlling performance and quantification/measurement of complex performance which have remained strong themes in my work. The collaborations I began while at APU, and still maintain, principally Rothengatter (Groningen), Chapman (Nottingham), Clegg (Colorado) were largely concerned with various aspects of driving.

Moving to Surrey, where my task was to establish a strong research group in Perception-Cognition, required that I do more mainstream work in Cognition (principally visuo-spatial aspects of working memory), largely because of Research Assessment Exercise pressures, in addition to my research on applied cognitive psychology (i.e. car driving, and later train driving). Surrey's seed-corn funding initiative which sought to coalesce various sleep related research interests across disciplines on the Surrey campus, occurred at the same point at which Surrey acquired a part-share in a 3 tesla fMRI magnet, and realising I could not afford the time commitment to develop sufficient knowledge to enable collaborations in both brain imaging and sleep physiology, I opted for the latter. Collaborations, initially with Dijk, a world-renowned sleep physiologist, and latterly with systems biologists (Archer, von Schantz) have enabled me to develop my interests in quantification/measurement of cognitive function and provided the knowhow and support to begin considering both genetic and more physiological transitory influences on performance. Other Surrey collaborations, with Bradshaw (visual perception) and Banks (cognitive modelling) have allowed me to grow my main stream cognitive activity (visual attention and working memory). My intention at UCC is to merge these interests in the physiological/genetics of cognitive performance with my more applied interests in cognitive aspects of driving, using on-going collaborations with Surrey to support the development of research strengths in these areas in Cork. At this early stage opportunities for collaboration both within the Department and across campus are very promising in theses respects. UCC's investment in a driving simulator, eye tracking technology and event-related recording facilities (and the expertise to use these, in the form of a dedicated post doc, Dr Chris Burns) represents its commitment to further developing applied cognitive psychology within the Department.

Over the years my research has directly shaped government policy with regard to driver education in UK and Australia, resulted in a revision of railway signal sighting guidelines (UK), and my human performance measurement work has resulted in on-going consultancies with major pharmaceutical industries and research collaborations on both sides of the Atlantic.
