Biography
Dr Mark Jessopp is a Lecturer in Zoology in the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Science, UCC. Mark is a marine biologist with a wide array of research experience, having worked on phytoplankton, zooplankton, marine mammals, and seabirds.
Mark's previous research experience includes spending 2 and a half years on the island of South Georgia in the South Atlantic, studying the breeding and foraging ecology of Antarctic fur seals, penguins and albatrosses using a combination of population census, telemetry and diet analysis. Mark has also been involved in research focussing on the role of Marine Protected Areas, and the role of coastline configuration in reserve connectivity. Current research effort focuses on the role of seals and seabirds in the marine ecosystem through diet and telemetry studies.
Research Interests
A wide variety of research interests under the broad umbrella of Marine Ecology and Conservation- Marine Protected Area designation including connectivity between MPAs and adjacent areas, and the role of coastline configuration in community dynamics
- Overwintering distribution and diet of Atlantic puffins from the Skellig Islands
- Foraging ecology of Northern gannets using GPS telemetry and diet studies
- Diet of grey and harbour seals using traditional scat analysis, Stable Isotope Analysis and genetic techniques
- Distribution and diving behaviour of grey and harbour seals using survey and telemetry studies
- Interactions between higher predators (seals & seabirds) and fisheries in terms of competition for resources, discard practices, and bycatch
- Circumpolar distribution and population structure of Antarctic krill
- Cumulative effects of windfarms on seabirds and marine mammals
- Underwater sound propagation and effects on marine biota
