Research Strategy

My research is focused on two areas: accounting education and corporate finance. Research activity in accounting education is carried out jointly with Margaret Healy. We are engaged in an on-going programme of research into aspects of the learning context, including teaching strategies, learning approaches and the research-teaching nexus, using mainly qualitative and phenomenological research approaches. We have also broadened our approach beyond accounting specifically to consider issues of relevance to the wider academic community  Research activity in Corporate Finance has in recent years been through mainly the medium of post-graduate thesis supervision.

Examples of recent research output

Healy, M. and McCutcheon, M., Irish Accounting Review, 2008, Volume 15, Issue 1, pp.31-49, Engagement with Active Learning: Reflections on the Experiences of Irish Accounting Students, 0797-9938.
This paper represents the consolidation of both an effective research partnership and movement from conference presentation of research to the publication of that research, thus making it available to a wider, international audience.

McCutcheon M., Young & Co., Facing Future challenges, Cases in Management Accounting and Business Finance, 2006, 7 pages, Hyndman, N. and McKillop, D., Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland, Dublin, 0-903854-18X.
I have a specific interest in the use of the case method in the teaching of Finance. This case forms part of an on-going strategy to develop case materials which are relevant to Irish undergraduate students.

Healy, M., McCutcheon, M. and Carr, M., Challenging Assumptions in Accounting & Finance: Initial Reflections on the Role of a Subject Support Centre, Paper presented at NAIRTL 2nd Annual Conference November 2008 and submitted for publication of the proceedings of the event.
This paper is part of a wider project on the establishment and dissemination of best practices and is supported by a research grant from NAIRTL. Our focus is on the enhancement of student learning (particularly but not exclusively in the business disciplines) in a research-informed manner. As well as its research output, this project facilitates the establishment of closer links and greater co-operation with colleagues across the third level sector.
