Biography

Dr Sinéad Kerins is a college lecturer in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology since 2003. Before beginning her lecturing career, Dr Kerins worked as a postdoctoral research scientist in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology UCC. Prior to this Dr Kerins completed a PhD and a BSc degree in Microbiology at National University of Ireland, Galway.

Dr Kerins completed a Certificate and Diploma in Teaching and Learning at UCC. She has developed and is currently teaching Molecular Biology modules to Pharmacy, Dentistry and Biochemistry students and Biochemistry to first year Science students. Dr Kerins is a member of the Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Dentistry, Medical, and Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds curriculum committee's and also a member of the school’s student council committee and the college of SEFS’S Academic Programmes and Curriculum Development (APCD) committee. Dr Kerins is also the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology’s programme coordinator, examinations coordinator and outreach coordinator and she has designed workshops for secondary school students and a scientific programme for transition year students.

Dr Kerins is the director of the joint UCC/CIT Biomedical Science programme and has been a member of the Biomedical Science board of studies since 2005. Dr Kerins was involved in the design and implementation of the joint direct entry Biomedical Science programme, which commenced in 2009.

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

Dr Kerins teaches Molecular Biology modules to second year Pharmacy and Dentistry students, fourth year Biochemistry students and MSc Bioinformatics with Computational Biology students. Dr Kerins also teaches introductory Biochemistry to first year Science students and delivers tutorials to second Science and MSc Biotechnology students. Dr Kerins is the undergraduate training coordinator and coordinates the laboratory based teaching in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology and supervises 4th year research projects for Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compound students.
