Research Profile

Biography

I am a lecturer in Education with a specialism in teaching students with English as an Additional Language (EAL), languages education, CLIL, pedagogical applied translation, disciplinary literacies,  multi-/plui-lingualism and minority student identities, heritage language education, family language planning and sociolinguistics of education. I have a decade of experience as a classroom practitioner, middle and senior leader in challenging, urban educational settings and am passionate about addressing educational disadvantage and enhancing social mobility through education. I am also passionate about promoting the minority intersectional student voice and exploring ways in which the multifaceted identities of students can be represented and embodied in the school context and in curricula. I am also interested in decolonisation of not only curricula but also teaching practice in the languages classroom. I teach on a range of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level and am interested in collaborating with researchers, practitioners and school communities to develop research and practice-driven results for challenges in educational contexts.

Research Interests

My research interests centre around the following themes:
  • English as an Additional Language in all educational settings but, in particular, post-Primary.
  • Educational sociolinguistics, multi-/pluri-/trans-lingualism as phenomenon and practice
  • Heritage Language Education and family language planning
  • Languages education: pedagogies and practice (including CLIL in non-ESL contexts)
  • intersectional approaches to understanding minority student identities in school communities and how these inform practice.
  • Decolonisation of curricula and language teacher education
  • Corpus-based approaches to languages education
  • Pedagogical audiovisual translation.
