Research Profile

Biography

Dr Elizabeth Cotter is Senior Technical Officer at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences since 2007.

Graduating with a first class honours degree (B.Sc. Zoology), and a Ph.D. (Marine Biology) from UCC, her research has focused primarily on aquaculture & commercially significant bivalve shellfish, from fouling of mussels by polychaete tubeworms to oyster health & disease, also general marine invertebrate biology (reproduction, immunology, physiology & biochemistry). She worked as a post-doctorate researcher on an EU INTERREG Ireland-Wales funded project under Professor Sarah Culloty and the Shellfish Health research group at the Aquaculture and Fisheries Development Centre, UCC.

In recent years, Elizabeth has collaborated on marine vertebrate research with Prof John Davenport, also researchers from the School of Engineering UCC, & the School of Biological Science, Queen's University Belfast. Elizabeth has undertaken training in laboratory techniques both at home & abroad, including assisted reproductive techniques (School of Agriculture & Food Science, UCD), molecular techniques (University of Kuopio, Finland) & shellfish immunology (School of Ocean Sciences, University of Bangor).
