Elaine O'Callaghan

Biography

Dr. Elaine O'Callaghan (BCLG, PhD) works as a researcher in family law, supporting the Special Rapporteur on Child Protection, Professor Conor O'Mahony, in the School of Law. Research to date has included contributions to the forthcoming report, A Review of Children's Rights and Best Interests in the Context of Donor-Assisted Human Reproduction and Surrogacy in Irish Law (December 2020), as well as the Annual Report of the Special Rapporteur on Child Protection 2020.

Prior to this role, Elaine worked as Judicial Research Assistant and Senior Judicial Research Assistant in the Four Courts and Criminal Courts of Justice. As part of this, Elaine acted as Special Assistant to Ms. Justice Finlay Geoghegan on the High Court's Child Abduction List. Elaine also worked with Professor O'Mahony and Dr. Kenneth Burns on the IDEA Project, a five country child protection project (Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Hungary and Estonia), co-funded by the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme of the European Union. 

Elaine’s research interests span public and private family law, including relationship breakdown, contact disputes, child protection and dispute resolution. Elaine has carried out research funded by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs, the Academy of European Law, the Committee for Judicial Studies, the Public Interest Law Alliance and the National Academy for Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning.  She also has a Certificate in Mediation, awarded by the Mediators' Institute of Ireland.
