Annual Master Class on Medieval Irish Poetic Metre
Every autumn, I run four two-hour master classes for new MA and PhD students. This series of classes is designed to introduce them to the history of medieval Irish poetry and the development of new metres with the arrival of Christianity and literacy to Ireland in the 5th century. The classes cover the development of metre, a detailed metrical analysis of selected medieval poems and an in-depth analysis of the nature of medieval Irish rhyme. The series is designed to provide the training required to allow students to work on medieval Irish poetry for their postgraduate research.
On-line MA in Irish Mythology and Folklore
The Department of Early and Medieval Irish and the Department of Folklore have recently collaborated to create a new on-line MA in Irish Mythology and Folklore. All members of the two departments were involved in the framing process. I took a particularly active role in this process and in the administrative side of things in the summer of 2021. I will co-teach one module on this MA with Dr Kevin Murray when it begins in Autumn 2022. The MA is very popular and is already full for AY 2022/23.
Biography
I qualified with a BA in English and Irish from University College Cork in 1996. I completed the H.Dip.Ed. in English in 1997 and an M.Phil. in Medieval Irish with a Modern Irish component, for which I was awarded the NUI Travelling Studentship in Medieval Irish in 1999. I lectured in the Departments of English and Celtic Philology in the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland from 1999-2003. On returning to UCC in 2003, I was employed on a three-year contract as a full-time Research Assistant with the Locus Project (http://www.ucc.ie/locus/), which is based in the Department of Early and Medieval Irish. During this time, I also lectured for the Department. In 2006, I was awarded a three-year Sparánacht Logainmneacha, or Placenames Scholarship, by (what is now) the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media and I conducted my Ph.D. research on place-names and population groups in pre-historic and early medieval Ireland in conjunction with the Locus Project. On completing this research in 2009, I was awarded a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship with the De Finibus Project: Christian Representations of the Afterlife in Medieval Ireland (http://definibus.ucc.ie/). This project was funded by an IRCHSS Project Grant in Theology and Religious Studies. I worked with both projects until 2012 and in August, 2012, I took up the post of Léachtóir le Gaeilge, or Lecturer in Irish Language and Literature at the University of Limerick where I stayed until 2015. I took up my current post at UCC as a lecturer in the Department of Early and Medieval Irish in September, 2015.Research Interests

- edition and translation with commentary of middle Irish poetry from its manuscript sources;
- edition and translation with commentary of classical early modern Irish (or bardic) poetry from its manuscript sources;
- literary and historical analysis of medieval and early modern Irish poetry;
- studies on early modern Latin translations of medieval Irish poetry;
- Christian representations of heaven, hell and the afterlife in medieval Ireland;
- the Irish precursors of Dante’s Divina Commedia;
- Modern Irish translations of Dante’s Divina Commedia and the translators’ use of a hybrid of 17th-century Irish metrical form and the structure of Dante’s terza rima in order to convey the subtlety of the rhyme;
- Classical echoes (Ovid and Homer) in medieval Irish literature.

Founder and administrator of the School of Irish Learning YouTube Channel: In October, 2021, my colleague Dr Caitríona Ó Dochartaigh and I set up a YouTube channel for the School of Irish Learning in order to be able to share publicly recordings we had made of various public lectures, seminars and conference events organised by members of the School. I took over the design and maintenance of the channel once it was set up and continue to maintain and update it. It has been a great success and has attracted 135 subscribers, mostly unconnected with the field of Irish/Celtic Studies, since it was set up in September, 2021. It currently houses 13 items including seminar papers by members of the School delivered for the School's Seminar Series; papers delivered for the Seminar in Ancient and Medieval Studies (organised by Drs Caitríona Ó Dochartaigh and Máirín MacCarron); papers delivered for the Rennes 2 - UCC Seminar Series (organised by Dr Ken Ó Donnchú); the poetry reading and music session of the Symposium on Early Irish Lyrics that I organised last October; and a very popular recording of Professor Myles Dillon reading 11 early Irish lyrics onto a 12 inch record some time in the 1950s. which I incorporated into a powerpoint presentation and recorded for YouTube. Leabhar Scéalach Siúlach II: A Tripartite Seminar to Celebrate the Return of the Book of Lismore to Cork' (followed by a viewing of the manuscript in Special Collections, Boole Library), 21st October, 2021. The first seminar of the SIL Autumn Seminar Series of 2021 was a celebration of the Book of Lismore and comprised three short talks (15 minutes each) within the usual hour of the seminar slot. Teaching Activities
Teaching Interests
I believe strongly in a combination of research-led lectures (e.g. CC2003), research-orientated skills-training (e.g. CC6006) and research-based seminars (CC6005) as per the Healey model for linking education and research. I teach a wide range of subjects through both English and Irish for the degrees in Celtic Civilisation and in Gaeilge and for the Department’s four MA degrees. In all my teaching, I concentrate on primary sources and espousing critical thinking. I run a voluntary extra-curricular series of Master Classes every autumn to introduce new postgraduates to medieval Irish poetical form. I make use of Canvas and other digital resources in order to develop my modules and I took an active role in developing our new on-line MA in Mythology and Folklore, working with LTU to ensure the programme will follow best practice. My teaching interests include Old Irish philology; Middle Welsh language and literature; the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and its impact on literacy; the rise of monastic and eremitic culture in early Christian Ireland; early Irish and Welsh lyric poetry (the earliest vernacular literature in Europe); medieval Irish political history; medieval, early modern and modern Irish palaeography; textual criticism of medieval and early modern Irish texts.Undergraduate Modules

- I have been the co-ordinator of the MA in Celtic Civilisation https://www.ucc.ie/en/cke23/ since 2016.
- I am currently supervising the thesis (20,000 words) of a student of the MA in Celtic Civilisation. The thesis entails the transcription, translation, textual criticism, edition and commentary of an early medieval Irish text from the Book of Leinster.

CC6005 Research Seminar (Departmental Seminar / postgraduate module for MA and PhD students)
- I led the Departmental Research Seminar from October, 2010 – April, 2011 reading ‘Eschatological texts from the Liber Flavus Fergusiorum: I Fifteen signs. Cuicc chomurdha .x. bratha annso; II The Day of Judgement. Día Luain laithi in measraidhthi; III The Harrowing of Hell: Ar n-eiseirghi Crist a carcair corcra.’
- I have led the Seminar again since September, 2019 reading a long late-Middle Irish poem known as the Colloquy of Fintan and the Hawk. This will continue in September, 2022.
- In recent years, I have developed CC6005 into a training module in medieval Irish literary criticism. Having completed this module, students will have learned how to transcribe a text from a medieval Irish manuscript, to edit it according to modern critical standards, construct an apparatus criticus, translate the text, write textual notes on the language and compose a commentary on the text itself. In the course of the discussions, students encounter the methods and pitfalls relating to such research.
- Since 2015, I have been compiling a substantial catalogue of suitable short texts from the Irish manuscript tradition for students of this module to edit and translate under my supervision.
- I have also developed a handbook for students approaching textual criticism for the first time.
- I conduct weekly seminars reading, translating and discussing a medieval Irish text with the staff and postgraduates of the Department in order to demonstrate to students the methods and pitfalls relating to such research.
- The last student to complete this module won the 'Cambrian Medieval Celtic Studies Prize for Young Scholars' with the final draft of their assignment for CC6005. This prize is administered by the editor of the journal Cambrian Medieval Celtic Studies, Professor Patrick Sims-Williams, and the essay will be published in Volume 83 of the journal (Summer, 2022) https://cmcspublications.com/prize.html
Annual Master Class on Medieval Irish Poetic Metre
Every autumn, I run four two-hour master classes for new MA and PhD students. This series of classes is designed to introduce them to the history of medieval Irish poetry and the development of new metres with the arrival of Christianity and literacy to Ireland in the 5th century. The classes cover the development of metre, a detailed metrical analysis of selected medieval poems and an in-depth analysis of the nature of medieval Irish rhyme. The series is designed to provide the training required to allow students to work on medieval Irish poetry for their postgraduate research.
On-line MA in Irish Mythology and Folklore
The Department of Early and Medieval Irish and the Department of Folklore have recently collaborated to create a new on-line MA in Irish Mythology and Folklore. All members of the two departments were involved in the framing process. I took a particularly active role in this process and in the administrative side of things in the summer of 2021. I will co-teach one module on this MA with Dr Kevin Murray when it begins in Autumn 2022. The MA is very popular and is already full for AY 2022/23.
