Research Profile

Biography

Dr Fiona Riordan is currently a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher on the CUSTOMISE (Comparing and Understanding Tailoring Methods for Implementation Strategies) project, funded by a HRB Research Leader Award awarded to Dr Sheena McHugh. Fiona is also involved in the LINK project, a collaboration with a local befriending service, funded by a Irish Research Council New Foundations award, and an evaluation of end to end implementation of integrated care for type 2 diabetes, funded by the Sláintecare Integration Fund. Fiona previously worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher on the IDEAs (Improving Diabetes Eye-screening Attendance) study which tested the feasibility of an intervention in primary care to improve the uptake of diabetic retinopathy screening.

Fiona was awarded a PhD in 2019. Her thesis was entitled "Improving the quality of diabetes care in a real world community context: influences, trends, and the implementation of a model of integrated care".  Fiona has a BSc in Genetics from University College Cork and graduated from Imperial College London with a Masters in Public Health (MPH) in 2013. Before starting her PhD in 2015 she worked as a Research Assistant in Imperial College, University College Dublin, and University College Cork.

Research Interests

My research interests include implementation science, quality improvement, integrated care and chronic disease management in primary care. As part of my doctoral research I examined how models of structured diabetes management in primary care perform in the Irish context, and evaluated the implementation of new integrated diabetes nurse specialist posts introduced to facilitate the delivery of a new national model of integrated care.
