Biography
Helen Lynch qualified as an Occupational Therapist from St. Joseph's College of Occupational Therapy, Dublin in 1983. Helen gained a Diploma in Montessori Education from the St. Nicholas College in London and a postgraduate award for advanced sensory integration from the University of Liverpool. She completed a master's degree in UCC in 2007, researching typical occupations of children in middle-childhood. In 2012, she completed a PhD in social sciences from the Dublin Institute of Technology exploring physical play environments in the homes of infants under two.
Helen worked for 20 years in paediatric services in Cork as senior Occupational Therapist and Manager of Occupational Therapy services in a variety of centres, specialising in environmental access, sensory integration, and occupational development. In collaboration with parents and health professionals, she was instrumental in the development of a unit in Cork for children with developmental coordination disorder: the DCD Unit. This innovative service provided a one-stop service for assessment, diagnosis and treatment for children with DCD and was one of the first in Ireland to do so. For 10 years, she was a member of the teaching and mentoring team teaching post-graduate modules in sensory integration for the S.I.Network UK and Ireland. She was successful in winning a scholarship for the national Clinicians in Leadership Programme run by the health services (2000-2002).
In 2004 she joined the department of Occupational Therapy in UCC as full-time lecturer and Director of Brookfield Occupational Therapy Clinic. She designed and co-ordinated the second year Occupational Therapy programme, focusing on Occupational Therapy applied to early childhood and teenagers for eight years. She is now Year Four co-ordinator and leads the teaching on research in the programme. She supervises undergraduate research projects related to children and family-centred practice and delivers masters modules in professional reasoning. In 2007, Helen won the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching in UCC
Currently Helen is Director of the Occupational Science and Therapy Graduate Studies programme, a member of Academic Council, and a member of the steering committee of ISS21 Children and Young Peoples group.
Research Interests
Helen's interests are in occupational science as it relates to child development, environments and play, and in occupation-based practice in services for children. Currently she is exploring children's participation in physical activity play, in relation to development, learning and well-being and is involved in a number of projects exploring outdoor play environments: school yards and local playgrounds. Helen was one of two Irish representatives on the European COST project for play and children with disabilities (Ludi). She is now Co- Principle Investigator on a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Horizon2020 Innovative Training Network, P4play, developing an occupational science PhD programme focused on the study of play and social inclusion.
Helen's PhD research explored indoor and outdoor learning environments in children under 2 years, with special focus on children's use of objects and spaces within the home environment. This study was commissioned by the Irish Centre for Early Childhood Development and Education (CECDE) under the National Children's Office.
