Research Interests
I maintain collaborative links with a number of leading dental researchers in Cork University Dental School and Hospital. The structure of dental data is complex in that many measurements can be made on individual teeth. There are up to 32 teeth in a patient's mouth and many studies are of a repeated measures design. The correlations that exist between measurements within the same teeth and between teeth within the same mouth present challenges in the statistical analyses of such data. I am currently involved in a number of research projects being run there. For example, a clinical trial is being conducted on a type of cement used in the application of orthodontic appliances. Assessments will be made on each of up to four teeth to which the cement was used to bond the orthodontic appliance.
I am researching methods of teaching statistics, in particular to large groups of students for whom statistics is a minor subject. There is some research in this area, though none in an Irish setting. I am researching the effects of using novel teaching techniques on students learning outcomes.
In November 2008, I began collaborating with the Coastal and Marine Resources Centre to supervise a PhD student in the area of spatial statistics and geographic information systems (GIS). These are new areas for me but ones I am interested in, particularly because of the potential applications to dental data and to medical data, in general. The research will evaluate the models and algorithms used in the estimation of variograms and kriging.

This report commissioned by the Department of Health and Children was closely associated with my PhD dissertation. The Dental Treatment Services Scheme had been in existence since November 1994 and data on the treatments provided within the scheme had accumulated since. It was the first time a statistical analysis of the utilisation of the scheme had been performed. The analyses contained in the report provides information to the Principal Dental Surgeons in the health service executives and the Department of Health and Children that will allow the planning and targeting of the dental services provided under the scheme. It also provides comparisons of the scheme with the parallel scheme designed for insured worker paying PRSI and describes the oral health status and treatment need of the people using the scheme and those eligible for it.

This report gives comprehensive details of a cross-border collaboration investigating the levels of overweight and obesity on the island of Ireland in 2001/2. It is based on a sample of almost 20,000 children in 4 age groups who were selected for a study of oral health (see below). It provides a comprehensive baseline ‘snap-shot' against which any efforts to tackle the obesity time-bomb and its effects can be compared. The results also provide a means of comparing to other industrialised countries retrospectively and prospectively. The statistical analyses investigate the aspects of socioeconomic status, demographics, dietary habits and lifestyle that contribute to obesity levels. The results of this study have been used to inform the National Taskforce on Obesity.

From a dental public health perspective this publication is very important as it give details of the oral health status of Irish children on a national scale for the first time since the mid 1980's. It is also the first time that a direct contemporary comparison has been made between children living in the fluoridated areas of the Republic and non-fluoridated North of Ireland. The main method of statistical analysis employed was Generalised Linear Models. It was the first time, to the best of my knowledge, that these techniques have been used in the analysis of dental caries. Dental caries is by nature a right-skewed and discrete variable which has traditionally been analysed using ANOVA, a technique which is unlikely to be valid due to the nature of the data. The comparison of the two methods of statistical analysis will form the basis of a publication in the future.
