Biography

Martin is a Post-doctoral Researcher evaluating a number of interventions to reduce alcohol consumption and related harm. Martin collaborates with the Southern Region Drugs and Alcohol Taskforce, the Health Service Executive, the Union of Students in Ireland and the majority of third-level institutions in Ireland on these projects. He is also involved in implementing, directing and evaluating UCC Health Matters, Ireland's Health Promoting University. Furthermore, he works as Post-doctoral Research on the Health Research Board funded SSIS-ACE study with the National Suicide Research Foundation.

Martin graduated in January 2016, having completed a PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health entitled "Alcohol Consumption and Related Harm Among University Students in Ireland". He has worked as Lead Researcher with a HSE funded project tasked with developing an award and accreditation scheme to respond to excessive alcohol consumption among third-level students. Furthermore, he has previously worked as Health Promotion Evaluation and Support Worker with UCC Health Matters.

Research Interests

My research interests are predominantly focused on alcohol consumption with a particular interest in creating typologies to tailor effective public health policy. The major focus of my research activity to date has been on providing the evidence base for policy and practice in relation to alcohol harm reduction among university students in Ireland. This has focused on the prevalence and second hand effects of alcohol consumption in addition to the different types of consumption exhibited by university students.

My current research focuses on the evaluation of public health interventions to reduce alcohol consumption and related harm. These interventions are based both in the university and community settings. In addition, I am providing research leadership on a number of quantitative and qualitative research projects focusing on student health and well-being through UCC Health Matters.
