Research Profile

Biography

I am a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Engineering and Architecture and the Environmental Research Institute at University College Cork, Ireland. I lead the Cleaner Production Promotion Unit, a multidisciplinary research group working on the human aspects of sustainability, with a particular emphasis on people’s relationship with energy and the energy system.

I hold a BSc in Environmental Science from the Faculty of Science, University of Limerick and an MSc (Government) from the Faculty of Commerce, UCC. My PhD research in the School of Engineering, UCC was a transdisciplinary exploration of value within building energy renovation projects - exploring project delivery configurations for satisficing renovation activities.

ORCID ID 0000-0001-8094-4121

Research Interests

My research focus lies at the intersection of the social sciences with science and engineering, I conduct engaged research focused on the theme of society, sustainability and energy.

My current activities include:
  • Science Communication Coordinator of SHiFT: Social Sciences and Humanities for Transformation and Climate Resilience | Cost Action CA21166 (2022-26), which proposes the creation of a transdisciplinary Hub to address existing challenges in advancing timely societal transformations in the face of climate change.
  • Co-Principal Investigator: NaturSea-PV (Horizon Europe, 2022-26), which is working to develop new eco-cementitious materials and bio-inspired design for floating PV sub-structures. Within this project I lead work focusing on understanding the societal context and the possible social impacts of deployment of floating PV installations.
  • Lead Irish participant on the IEA UsersTCP Gender & Energy Task (2021-23), which gathers researchers from the fields of gender and energy in a global network to analyse energy policy and technologies from gender perspectives and which aims to provide recommendations for policy design and implementation.
  • Principal Investigator: ENCLUDE (H2020, 2021-24), which aims to operationalise the energy citizenship concept at all scales of policy-making, and in so doing, catalyse a chain reaction of decarbonization actions across the EU. In this project, I lead a work package which is characterising and conceptualising individual and collective expressions of energy citizenship.
  • Principal Investigator: EUB SuperHub (H2020, 2021-24) that aims to support the evolvement of the building certification process in the EU by development of a scalable methodology. In this project, I lead a package of work focused on stakeholder characterisation and engagement.
  • Principal Investigator: ACCEPT (H2020, 2021-24), in which together with my colleague Dr Breffní Lennon, I lead a package of work focused on consumer engagement involving: design and setting up of ‘living labs’; mapping consumer behaviour on energy; analysing governance and socio-political contexts; and mapping community stakeholders at the project demo sites.
  • Principal Investigator: X-ROTOR (H2020, 2021-23), which is developing a highly innovative wind turbine design to directly target cost of energy reduction and scalability of wind turbines. In this context, I lead two work packages, one which aims to determine economic, social and environmental impacts of the novel technology, and a second which deals with the project’s communication and dissemination
  • Principal Investigator & Coordinator: EnergyMeasures (H2020, 2020-24), this project which I coordinate assists energy poor households, by providing small energy measures and support for energy-related behaviour change. The project approach both takes account of the physical nature of housing units and is reflective of the lived experience of the household members.
  • Co-Principal Investigator: SafeWAVE (EMFF, 2020-23), which focuses on non-technical barriers to marine energy, I lead a package of work which aims to co-develop and demonstrate a framework for education and public engagement on marine renewable energy.
  • Principal Investigator: REALISE (H2020, 2020-23), within which I lead work focused on the societal readiness of carbon capture and storage technology (CCS) and social acceptability of its potential deployment. This include tasks focused on education and public engagement; societal impact assessment & social acceptability; analysis of the socio-political context; and public outreach activities.
  • Principal Investigator: EnergyPolities (SEAI, 2018-22), I lead this project exploring how governance structures intersect with the socio-economic and key socio-cultural factors, including gender, to influence the social acceptability or otherwise of energy projects
Other recent notable projects include:
  • Co-Principal Investigator: Imagining 2050 (EPA 2018-2021), this important project, which was led by my colleague Dr Gerard Mullally, engaged with civic society using innovative approaches, to explore and co-develop future visions of, and pathways to, a low carbon and climate-resilient future. An added innovative component of the project was the use of creative communication and engagement methods.
  • Principal Investigator & Coordinator: ENTRUST (H2020, 2015-18), I coordinated this project which explored the human and societal dimension of the energy system. The project developed an in-depth understanding of how human behaviour around energy is shaped by both technological systems and socio-demographic factors especially gender, age and socio-economic privilege.
