Research Profile

Biography

I am a senior lecturer at UCC in Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Ecology. My research and teaching interests include the application and development of GIS, spatial analysis and modelling and geocomputation to address a suite of geographical, environmental, and ecological issues.

During my career at UCC, I have secured ~€6.5 million of external funding on 15 projects that is currently supporting a diverse group of postgraduate students, early career researchers and administrators. This portfolio contains grants supported by Science Foundation Ireland, Health Research Board, Environmental Protection Agency, Met Éireann, Teagasc, the Marine Institute, the Irish Research Council, and the EU Regional Development Fund through INTEREG.

I previously held a post-doc in the Department of Computer Science at the University of York, where I was working on an Innovate UK / BBSRC funded project "Crowd-sourced prediction of plant pest and disease occurrence using Mobile Apps". I completed my doctorate in the Department of Geography and the Environment at the University of Texas at Austin, where my primary research addressed the long-standing issue of how to incorporate movement at different spatial and temporal scales into species distribution models. I was also the research assistant on a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project investigating the effects of spatial structure, sampling, and scale on simulated data. My research is widely published, and has been recognised with national awards. I have also lectured on a variety of topics across different institutions.

I welcome applications from prospective graduate students interested in undertaking research in Geographic Information Systems, GeoComputation, Movement Analysis, Spatial Ecology, and Species Distribution Modelling.

I am currently advertising one funded PhD position: https://paulholloway.weebly.com/positions.html

Research Interests

I am currently pursuing several fields of research under the remit of geographic information science and systems and biogeography:

-
Analysis of Movement Data: I am currently researching new GIScience techniques to improve habitat selection and use, including generating agent-based models of animal movement to improve distribution predictions and investigating how the scale and semantic conceptuaalisation of wmoving objects for use in a GIS affects object-movement inferences, having published such works in The Professional Geographer and the International Journal of Geographical Information Science.

-
Spatial Ecology: I am currently researching new methods of incorporating biotic interactions in species distributions and phenology. I am a co-PI on the EPA funded project PhenoClimate exploring biotic interactions among species phenology across Ireland, in collaboration with UCC, UCD and Technical University Dublin. I'm also part of a team that has received
€2.6 million in funding from the Ireland-Wales Co-Operation Programme to explore the effects of climate change on bird populations in collaboration with Geo Smart Decisions, Aberystwyth University, MaREI, Compass Geoinformatics and the BTO. I am also undertaking applied research, having recently published an article on the drivers underlying woody vegetation patterns in Botswana, biodiversity patterns in coastal ecosystems and the incorporation of host-parasite interactions to improve projections of ticks in Ireland.

-
Machine Learning: I am also using machine learning on geospatial datasets to improve understanding and prediction of geographical phenomena. I have published in Ecological Indicators on aphid phenology using this methodology, as well as funding from Teagasc to explore machine learning techniques on crop-yield and nutrient data, supporting a PhD student. In the EPA project we are also exploring the development of deep-learning techniques to automatically classify the acoustic signatures of bird and insect species to identify changes in the timings of phenological events.

-
Geographic Pedagogy: Following the completion of the PGCE and HDip in Teaching and Learning, I have been researching new methods of incorporating digital technology in (and beyond) the classroom. I recently led an article exploring this, that is currently being published in the Journal of Geography in Higher Education, with the project being awarded the President's award for excellence in teaching.

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

In a time where students are facing tougher job markets and uncertainty in their futures, and where the world is becoming a smaller place, it is my goal not only to keep geography relevant, but to make it advantageous. When students become open to geographical thought, issues, and inquiry, then the dissemination of geographical knowledge is the most powerful, their work within and beyond the classroom is amplified, and their potential to become highly recognised global citizens can be reached. My role as geography instructor revolves around three student-centred goals:

  1. A dynamic learning environment
  2. A space where students feel safe to engage each other, the material, and me
  3. Time for students to critically read, reflect, and present their thoughts
I am primarily a lecturer in Geographic Information Systems. In these modules I teach a wide variety of theoretical and conceptual issues in GIS, and develop practical sessions in a range of GIS applications. I can also lecture in spatial ecology, having developed a module that discussed the theory of biogeography and landscape ecology, and implemented GIS to address ecological issues. I use a variety of software in my teaching, but primarily use ArcGIS and R in my practical sessions.

Below is an outline of the modules I have taught, and those that I am teaching this year. *denotes Module Coordinator, ⁰denotes shared teaching
