Research Profile

Biography

My background is in Intensive Care/Critical Care nursing. My MSc dissertation investigated blood loss associated with arterial blood gas analysis sampling. My PhD thesis investigated how nurses detect and report physiological deterioration in acutely ill patients. My current interest is in end-of-life care in Intensive Care.

I trained and studied  Classic Grounded Theory methodology under the direction of Dr Barney Glaser, one of the originators of the methodology.  As a result I have supervised 4 PhD, using this, to successful completion and currently supervise 4 students using CGT.  I have conducted a number of training workshops and seminars in Ireland, Canada, Portugal, Malta, and the UK.  I have also advised students using this from the University of Bergen, Norway, the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden and the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.  I am considered to be a renowned expert in Classic Grounded Theory.

Research Interests

My methodological interest is in Grounded Theory (Glaserian). My research interests are in all aspects of critical care, particularly in relation to the early detection of physiological deterioration and clinical decision making.

My research strategy currently revolves around deteriorating conditions- patients in physiological decline.  This was the basis of my PhD work and I am following on from this.  To date, it has been in the area of critical care but I have recently reviewed my strategy and will broaden it out to include deteriorations generally, with a specific focus on cardiology as well as critical care.  My focus recently has been on end-of-life care in Intensive Care.

In relation to impacting on the discipline, my paper (2005) ¿Visualising deteriorating conditions¿ published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing has been cited by 11 other papers.  I have presented the results of my findings from my PhD and published them in a variety of peer reviewed journals as well as presenting at a number of national and international conferences.  As a result of publication, I was invited to present at the ¿Deteriorating hospital patient¿ conference in Portsmouth, UK.  This conference covered all aspects of the detection and reporting of physiological deterioration.

Consistent with my research strategy, I completed a study investigating the impact of a Medical Emergency Team has on rates of mortality.  I also investigated how people suffering from polio deal with the knowledge of a secondary deterioration.  To date, I have completed two projects on end-of-life care.  One was in conjunction with colleagues in Germany, Brazil, Palestine and the UK and investigated critical care nurses' role in end-of-life care. The other project was under the auspices of the European Federation of Critical Care Nurses' Associations, in collaboration with colleagues in Sweden, Germany, Israel and the UK.  It was a pan European project investigating the to explore European intensive care nurses experiences of the transition from curative care to comfort care.

I have developed methodological expertise in Grounded Theory and have been invited to present at methodological and research conferences and seminars.  While these are multi-professional, they attract a number of nurses.  Also, I have been invited to examine a number of research degrees and have supervised four students to completion.
