BiographyI have been working on the BEd Sports Studies and Physical Education in the School of Education, University College Cork, since 2012 when I began my job as lecturer in Physical Education and Coordinator of School Placement. - Masters Dissertation, 2000. Title ‘The Value of Dance in the Primary School Curriculum and a Journey towards Self Reflective Practice’
I am currently completing a PhD thesis exploring the School Placement Tutor's journey to inform effective and equitable supervision of Physical Education student teachers in Initial Teacher Education in the Republic of Ireland.
Main Research question
"What are the motivations, roles and relationships which emerge for placement tutors in their supervision of physical education student teachers in school placement?”
Subsidiary research questions include:
1. How do placement tutors define their professional identity in their role as teacher educators? 2. What are the challenges, opportunities and dilemmas experienced by placement tutors in their position of multi-membership within two communities of practice; the school and the university?
3. Do placement tutors have a role to play in the ‘third space’ (Zeichner 2010) of school placement?
4. Do placement tutors experience a tension in the dual role of assessor and advisor in the school placement process, and does this impact upon the task of supervising physical education student teachers?
